As a leader, it is very important to listen to followers to know what they think by listening to their opinions when the leader is making a final decision that will potentially affect the followers. As a President, it was very important for Lincoln to listen to the American people and to hear about the concerns they have about the nation. When it came to communication, Lincoln was a natural communicator who spoke of his vision for an unrestricted and honest country along with his concern for the south. As a leader, it is important to be able to have good communication with their followers especially when it comes to decisions and ideas that the leader has. The leader needs to be able to speak about his vision and how it will benefit the followers (McClaire). The reason for this was because it helped to have people around him whose personalities and temperaments are different from his own. An example of this was when Lincoln had made up his mind to go ahead with the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves in the south. After he gathered the cabinet together, he told them he did not want to hear any more about their thoughts on the issue, but he would still listen to any suggestions or ideas when it came to executing the Emancipation Proclamation. Even though members did not support his plan, they still gave him their thoughts which was to wait for a victory before going ahead with the announcement and Lincoln took their advice and waited
