SAVE THE CHILDREN
I chose Save the Children to familiarize myself with because this non-governmental organization is the largest to help children all over the world. Save the Children has an office and is doing wide work also in Finland. I have a colleague who has worked for Save the Children and I also once thought of applying for their humanitarian aid course.
The story of Save the Children
Save the Children started working already in the late 1919’s. In 1919 the British Eglantyne Jebb established the Save the Children Fund to feed children facing starvation after World War I. In the United States the first initial programme was to provide clothes, school supplies and hot lunches to schoolchildren in Kentucky in 1932. In 1939 Save the Children expanded to Europe helping children displaced by the World War II. The work lasted from 1939 to 1945. Help arrived also to Finland. Save the Children is the leading independent non-profit organization for children in need. (Save the Children International 2015).

It does work for many different objectives: health, education, poverty, humanitarian aid etc. Only in 2014 it helped over 166 million children. (Save the Children 2015) The organization has different programmes and strategies for different topics. For example “Moving ahead on education –Save the Children’s global education strategy for 2015”, “Framework for the future – Ending poverty in a generation”, “Save the Children’s child protection strategy for 2013-2015 – making the world a safe place for children”, “Investing in impact for children – Save the Children 2013-2015 strategic plan”… among others.
