Abolishing The Death Penalty

Throughout history capital punishment, also known as the death penalty has been a form of punishment that has been imposed upon criminals who have committed the most heinous of all crimes. The use of capital punishment is highly controversial among the nations of the world today. There have been many movements in the EU during recent years to put an end to capital punishment worldwide. In the mean time, there are nations around the world who feel as though their communities and legal systems benefit from the use of the death penalty. Many of the arguments as to why the death penalty should be abolished are simply invalidated by the clear positive impacts that the use of this punishment has on the nations that use it. In regards to minimum standards for the death penalty, these parameters for execution are indeed reasonable, but any execution that takes place beyond those barriers are inevitably unjust. Another major flaw in the arguments in favor of abolishing the death penalty is engulfed in the religious aspect. Commitment to religion has no place in governmental and legal systems, therefore should not be accounted for during government affairs. Abolishing the death penalty on grounds of religion is nothing more than a misconstrued conception of the difference between religion and state. One major aspect of the death penalty that works in favor of society is that it preconditions the minds of the perpetrator (Gealogo). The death penalty does act as a deterrent to crime as the person planning to, terrorize, murder, rape etc,) will think twice before carrying out major acts of violence. If the likeliness for a crime to be committed goes down because of fear of the death penalty, the only outcome is positive as it provides safety for the general public (Gealogo). This shines light upon a major drawback that would come of abolishing the death penalty, as it shows weakness and tolerance for unacceptable, violent crimes. In addition, a major weighing factor for the death penalty is justice for the victim(s) and their families (Steroff). When someone commits a crime of great magnitude such as murder on a large scale, it is only just that the perpetrator no longer gets to exercise their rights. In reference to the old adage “an eye for an eye” when someone takes the life of another theirs should be taken in return (Gealogo).
