An Analysis on the Plot Development of the Short Story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner
1. INTRODUCTION
A short story is the art of imagination which is composed of facts and fantasy. It allows the readers experience different emotions and different lives through the characters. There are five basic elements of a short story. They are setting, plot, character, point of view and theme. These elements can be examined to analyze a short story. Previous Works
Ruth Sullivan (1971) found the importance of the narrator in “A Rose for Emily”. Floyd C. Watkins (1954) observed the structure of “A Rose for Emily ”. Little research has been done on plot development of this short story. This research paper was to investigate whether “A Rose for Emily” has the typical plot structure or not.
2.5. Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of the paper is to study the plot development and structure of the novel.
The objectives are:
1. to study how the author uses the five elements to develop the plot
2. to study the use of flashback to support the plot development, and
3. to study whether the events are arranged in a chronological order or not.
3. Method
The research paper studied how the plot develops throughout this short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. To analyze the plot development, plot elements of fiction stated by Pickering and Hoeper (1986) was used. Firstly, the main events of the story was identified and categorized into five different elements: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
