He mainly focuses on how women’s behavior, specifically those of the younger generation, was changing during this time period. He believes that people need to be worried about the “moral code of the country.” He explained the country’s moral code previous to the one forming as one where women were seen as ‘guardians of morality’ and should be treated accordingly by men. Women were not supposed to kiss any man men until the ‘right one’ came along and this would typically be the man she was going to marry. Allen started noticing the change in the ways women dressed in more revealing clothes, were going to nightclubs, being seen dancing provocatively at these nightclubs, drinking, openly smoking cigarettes, and engaging in a more sexually liberating lifestyle. These behaviors were a complete turnaround from the prim and proper ways that women were expected to have in preceding generations. Many people believed and hoped that this new lifestyle was only a phase that would fade out over a couple years and the younger generation would come to their senses, although that was not the case.
