While I was there, a child with Autism came into the office. The Social Worker kindly greeted her and invited her to sit down and talk. Instead of having a dry conversation, the two conversed through board games and puppets. As they moved further into the activities, the young girl would slowly open up to the Social Worker, forming an irreplaceable bond. I remember thinking how amazing it is that something as simple as a board game could bring two uniquely different people together as one, to help one another grow. In those few moments, everything I knew about children with disabilities were challenged. Children that I once thought were helpless and a burden, transformed in front of my eyes into the most resilient of us all. Her kindness as she brushed the hair of the puppet, and told the Social Worker about her favorite book; and the light that shone so brightly out of her sea blue eyes are an image I will never forget. The young girl became my muse for my previous love for Social Work. As I continue to Graduate school, I look forward to having my beliefs and attitudes challenged daily. I understand that growth comes from experience, be it positive or negative. By immersing myself into different cultures, families, and environments, I will grow in a way I have never imagined.
