As each small wooden piece found its way into the larger plan, there were moments where I would be so attentive to the puzzle that no words could break the trance. Sixteen years later, I find myself silently drawn towards the puzzle that remains to be our very existence. Instead of having a dry conversation, the two conversed through board games and puppets. As they moved further into the activities, the young girl would slowly open up to the Social Worker, forming an irreplaceable bond. I remember thinking how amazing it is that something as simple as a board game could bring two uniquely different people together as one, to help one another grow. In those few moments, everything I knew about children with disabilities were challenged. Children that I once thought were helpless and a burden, transformed in front of my eyes into the most resilient of us all. Her kindness as she brushed the hair of the puppet, and told the Social Worker about her favorite book; and the light that shone so brightly out of her sea blue eyes are an image I will never forget. This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

Her story helps to tell the tale of overcoming obstacles and the desire for a better life. As social workers, we can learn from this memoir to see our clients as a whole and help them to identify their own personal strengths. Focusing on past mistakes or problems only helps to clarify and bring light to the “exceptions of the problem” and what is going right in our client’s life. I think that this memoir shows what true resiliency is and should continue to be shared in the social work profession to better enhance our own skills when working with…

For the disability ministry project, we were asked to choose a practicum experience where we shadowed or spoke to someone helping someone with a disability. While spending the day at school I was able to interact with the students, teachers, and overall staff of the high school; gaining insights, perspectives, and forming thoughts on everything I had witnessed.
