Getting a job out in the real world as a dental hygienist is not a problem right now because there is such a high demand for it. The factor that I see many hygienists look at is the pay. After doing a little research, I found out the Texas, California, Alaska, Nevada, and Arizona are some of the highest paying states in the dental hygienist field. The hourly average starting pay for a dental hygienist is $33. However, depending on where you work that hourly wage can go up or down. The yearly average pay is over seventy thousand. To gain more information I interviewed a Regina Geis. Regina Geis is a dental hygienist at the County Dental Care in Billings, MT. I gained a lot of information from Regina because she has been 5 years now and she answered every question with her own opinion. Regina said that her main duty as a hygienist is whitening teeth and she absolutely loves it. Regina actually got her degree at Community College. It took her two years to finish her prerequisites and two years of the actual dental program. Regina told me that the educational part of becoming a dental hygienist was by far harder than the essential job itself. Regina loved the last semester of dental school. She said that she was so prepared to go out and get a job in the dental world. I asked Regina if being a dental hygienist was all that she thought it was going to be and she said even more than I thought. She said, “Honestly Shelby, I loved my job. Not many people can get up and go do something that they love.” She told me that if I can get through the school part, the rest of it will be so rewarding. She said that the only thing about being a dental hygienist that she is worried about is her wrists. Regina stated that she has only been working at this for 5 years now, and already has some pain in her wrists sometimes. Talking to Regina was probably the best thing for me.
