Good Will Hunting Psychological Analysis

Decent Essays
The film Good Will Hunting is about a young adult, Will Hunting, who has a brilliant mind, but comes from a poor neighborhood and an abusive background. He has the ability to perform nearly impossible math calculations, but has a hard time with relationships and trusting others. Throughout the film, Will undergoes therapy that helps him deal with his aggression. The movie contains multiple psychological principles that effect Will, such as cognitive dissonance, a self-fulling prophecy, and social traps. Not only are these principles apparent in Will, but in the people around him as well, which affects the decisions he makes. In the middle of the film, Will Hunting is standing at the construction site where he works talking to his friend, …show more content…
Lambeau continually talks about how Sean is not doing what is best for Will, and turns the conversation to all about himself. He believes that Sean is just jealous of all he has accomplished, and only wants to use Will for his brilliant mind. He seems to have his own idea of how he wants Will’s life to be mapped out, but Sean tries to redirect the conversation back on what is best for Will. Social traps are present in this scene. A social trap is where one harms someone or a group of people when thinking about their own interests (Meyers, 2011, p. 688). When a person tries to maximize their own goals over the goals of others, it can lead to destructive behavior. This usually happens within a group. When multiple persons only think about their own gain, they both end up coming out with a worse situation than they were in before. In this film, a social trap is relevant because Professor Lambeau is only thinking about his own personal interests instead of Will’s, which was the main reason he tried to save Will from jail in the first place. What is different about the social trap in this movie is that Sean, the psychiatrist, was able to point out that Will’s needs were to be placed above their own. Will was able to escape the trap with Sean’s help. If Sean had been thinking about himself, it could have negatively impacted Will’s future. The scene right after shows Will having a realization and he finally breaks down and cries on Sean’s shoulder. Since he overheard the conversation they had before, he was reluctant to come into Sean’s office, but Sean was able to comfort him and make him realize that he was trying to do what was best for him all

The myth of freedom is introduced as a major theme in both the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and the film "The Graduate." Each work has evidence on how society controls us based on the conformities and what is "normal." Throughout these stories you can notice patterns on how higher authorizes empower and overrule people in society, which create restrictions towards who the characters are as people. Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest recognizes how higher authorities are controlling every aspect of their lives, and McMurphy challenges the theme of freedom, in numerous ways, within an enclosed environment.…

For my film analysis, I chose to analyze the movie “The Outsiders” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on the novel “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. In this movie, a gang of outcasts from the north side of town called the Greasers are always fighting against a rival group called the Socials, who are the rich jocks from the south side of town. The story follows two young Greasers, Johnny and Ponyboy, who aren’t like the others. These two see that fighting is pointless, but it’s just the way they live their life. The two boys get into a fight with some Socials and end up killing one.…

Conformed To Murder It 's the year 1951, Solomon Asch and his students begin their social psychology experiments that today would be considered the basis of social psychology. Subjects of his experiments demonstrated proof that their thoughts and opinions on a particular topic or question could be heavily influenced and altered by the peer pressure of a majority group. Questions would be asked to a group of 7-8 college aged students to study their answers, the catch was that these questions would be almost impossible to get wrong, especially for college students, but a control group of all but one of these students (the subject) would purposely get their answer wrong in an attempt to influence the subject’s answer. The results were shocking,…

“The Blind Side” is a film depiction of the life of NFL left tackle, Michael Oher and his miraculous transition from being a homeless teen to becoming an NFL first round draft. The film follows the development of Michael as he is taken off the street by the Tuohy’s and with their support became involved with football. I chose this film because it portrays the social and behavioural development of a teen without a stable upbringing and how it affects his relationship and encounters with others. The movie does not only show the development aspect of one stage of adolescence but follows Michael’s character from childhood to his adult years. As well, the movie forms basis of comparison between Michael and the Tuohy children.…

Is there eternal sunshine in the spotless mind? This is the question posed by writers Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth in their movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This movie, directed by Gondry, explores the idea that feelings and emotions are more powerful than memories, and that if we erased all of our memories, we would still possess the feelings and emotions that were created by those memories. The movie was inspired by a male friend of Bismuth who said that he would like to have all memory of his girlfriend erased. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tells a story about two people, Joel and Clementine, who are in a bad relationship and eventually break up.…

    Forrest Gump Film Analysis

Forrest Gump is a film that defies the conventions of filmmaking, and in that sense it is difficult to do a typical analysis of the film. It’s not so much that the film is overly complicated or that reality is always in question or any art house tricks of that kind; it’s just that Gump doesn’t really follow any rules. We begin with the most obvious: the plot. This is a film that should have redefined the biopic. It is completely about the life and times of Forrest, the protagonist, in fact through it all that’s the only thing it’s consistently about.…
