Personal Narrative: An Interview With A Nurse

Improved Essays
When I found out that I had to interview a nurse, I was a bit nervous. I interviewed a friend of a friend and was scared that she was going to tell me that she hated her job and dreads going to work. I got the exact opposite response. She told me that she loves everything about her job, except her commute. I was relieved when she said that. I was comforted by the fact that she has been a nurse for several years and still enjoys it. When I got to the question about what the most difficult part of her job is, I naively thought that she would say nothing. Instead, she said annoying patients. Angela F. Hanna and Patricia Dunphy Suplee are two nurses that provided information on professional boundaries. They start off by saying that “nurses are expected to be attentive, therapeutic, and caring” (2012). However, it seems that these behaviors can cross boundaries very quickly. I think that the hardest part for me will be separating myself from the patient. I feel that I can often relate to people, and I think that it will be difficult for me to not want to fix their problems if I can. I feel that I would want to buy a Barbie for a patient’s daughter who is bored or buy a patient’s sister a snack if she is feeling down and hungry. The most important thing for me to remember is to not let my good intentions cross the line. Hanna and Suplee also provide some warning signs of crossing professional boundaries. Some of these warning signs include spending an excessive amount of time with a patient or showing special treatment (2012). I think that the best way to prevent crossing boundaries is to realize what examples of crossing boundaries are. I learned several examples of what is and is not crossing boundaries in class and Hanna and Suplee provided several others, so I feel confident that I will be able to act in a professional and appropriate way with my

I personally have not had any direct interaction with the Kansas State Board of Nursing. During my senior year of high school I obtained my certified nursing assistant license, which I have only had to renew once. My current job at Overland Park Regional Medical Center does not enforce that I have to reinstate my license since I am currently in nursing school pursing my degree. With graduation coming up soon I am sure all of us will have communication with the BON (Board of Nursing) before we know it.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

A Day with a Hospice Nurse Hospice nursing is more than just “nursing”, its listening, showing compassion and being and advocate for peace and comfort. Hospice nurses provide individualized care to their patients and families during a time of difficulty and transitioning. During each of our visits, the nurse demonstrated respect for the patient’s views and wishes by asking permission before entering or performing and part of the assessment. She was also actively listening to concerns and asking what else she can do for them.…

When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…

Overall this experience was a great experience for me. In comparison to previous experiences, I believe that I have grown confidence. At a health fair a few weeks ago, the environment was not private; in comparing the experience I had today, I would have to say that this was certainly more private, comfortable and confidential, and the ability to build a nurse-patient relationship is higher. I think I could have made this interview better by utilizing more nursing concepts, therefore, developing a better plan.…

The dreaded evening lull. That is what emergency room physicians detest, to see a steady, and reliable flow of patients, slow, to a trickle. You can hear the audible click of the clock as the waiting room empties, and as the waiting room quiets, the halls swell with a steady orchestra of monitors, alarms, and chit chat. Myself, well, I could be found in no routine location, no designated cubicle, but rather on a WOW, a workplace on wheels. See, I was an emergency department physician scribe, for what may have been, the four most illuminating years of my life.…

Even with the support and education we give to patients and students there is a fine line on professional- boundaries that I have to make sure I do not cross. I will do this by following the guidelines we learn in nursing school on communication, along with using therapeutic communications and using touch appropriately with my patients. Some challenges I may come across in the workplace are a patient or family member asking me a lot of personal questions and deflecting my questions. I could also run across receiving a gift or money from a client, becoming emotionally involved in a client’s personal relationships or inappropriately using a nurse’s position. There are many tools and behaviors I can use to make sure not to cross professional boundaries, as I become a professional nurse.…
