At a younger age Janie was curious about the idea of relationships and love, but her grandmothers strict view, as well as society's negative view on the subject, made it hard for her to understand what love really is. Janie views her grandmother as a very strong important figure. Hurston writes “Nanny had taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon-for no matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you,” (89) which portrays Nanny's view that dreams can never be obtained. All Nanny wanted was for Janie to be an upper-class woman who would sit on a porch. So she took "The biggest thing God had ever made, the horizon ... and pinched it into such a little bit of a thing that she could tie it about her granddaughter's neck tight enough to choke her" (Hurston 89). What Nanny did was she took the open possibilities of life that Janie could have explored, and instead constricted them into a singular ideal that she forced Janie to pursue. By marrying Janie off to Logan Killicks, Nanny forced Janie's horizon into almost…

While racism is a motif explored in the novel, Hurston’s focus lies on Janie’s personal experiences and relationships, which Wright fails to consider in his search for a theme. Throughout the novel, Janie searches for romantic fulfillment and an ideal relationship, as symbolized by a pear tree and the way its “thousand sister-calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight” (Hurston 11). In her first relationship, farmer Logan Killicks gave Janie a large amount of freedom by not actively controlling her but no love; the absence of love in her relationship causes her to leave with another man, Jody Starks.…

Their Eyes Were Watching God Argumentative Essay True love can be defined as a strong and lasting affection - a happy, passionate and fulfilling relationship, which after a long time, the people are still passionate and care deeply for each other; to love unconditionally. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, readers follow the point of view of Janie Crawford in the form of a flashback - starting from her childhood and going through her three marriages. The book begins with Janie telling her story to her best friend Pheoby Watson and ends with her reflecting on everything that has happened. Perhaps Janie Crawford did not achieve true love with Logan Killicks or Joe Starks, but she did with and after Tea Cake, which changed her by helping her find self-love, what kind of person she was, and who she wanted to be.…

As a result of her quest for this love Janie realizes that although her marriage with Tea Cake was far from perfect, it worked for her as she found and realized that true love does exist. Hurston by no way wants us to aspire to be like them but shows the coming together of two individuals to create something much bigger. Hurston displays Janie 's chase after her vision of ideal love through the use of symbolism and nature imagery to show that as love strengthens perfection loses its meaning.…
