Zootopia Satire

Nowadays, Disney movies are a hit or miss: it is hard to live up to the motto “a film the entire family can enjoy” with every movie. Yet, Disney made an animated masterpiece when it created a utopia for zoo animals. Zootopia is caked with humor, layers of character development, a deep understanding of how stereotypes and racism affect society as the icing on top with bits of symbolisms being the cake topper. With these features and themes, Zootopia is Disney’s latest movie to engross more than its intended children audience.
First and foremost, Zootopia’s humor can be appreciated by the entire family. It has it all from puns, to parodies, to countless wisecracks. Judy has an Ipaw (Ipod) with artists such as Catty Perry( Katy Perry), Fur Figthers (Foo Fighters), Guns N’Rodents ( Guns N’ Roses), Kanine West (Kayne West) etc. Moreover, Zootopia parodies a scene from the Godfather, a classic 1972 movie. In this scene, Mr. Biggs, a rodent, is a mafia boss with a menacing posse of polar bears. Mr. Bigg mentions how

When Judy first enters the ZPD department Clawhouser, an overweight, flamboyant cheetah calls her cute. In Zootopia ‘cute’ is a word reserved only for other bunnies. Simply put, another bunny can call another bunny cute but when another species does it its offensive. This is a direct parallel to minorities and slurs such as Black people and the n-word. However, the most controversial uproar in Zootopia comes from the well-intended Judy Hopps. In a damaging press conference, she unknowingly and ignorantly condemned all predators. To paraphrase Judy’s speech, she tells how savagery is in a predator’s nature, it is their biological. Judy continues this bigotry attitude with her friend, Nick Wilde by telling him he is not like “them” (the other predators). The heroine narrow-mindedness almost rips apart Zootopia and her

In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Firstly, the author states that Disney has become a conglomerate having many subsidiaries and that it has had troubling effects on what Disney considers child-friendly.…

Cloning is a controversial topic which lies in the morals of the people, the decision to make a mini replica of a preexisting thing in a lab causes a range of reactions. Cloning is considered a type of asexual reproduction, which consists of reproducing DNA. My fascination with human cloning started in sixth grade because of a Novel by Nancy Farmer called The House of the Scorpion, the story is about a young boy who was isolated much of his younger life by a drug lord which is the original copy of the young boy. Matteo the original is over 200 years old because he discovered a way to keep producing clones of himself that provide him with organs and body parts to live forever. Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…

The physical qualities of animal characters typically dictate their personality or characteristics, so basic character traits are seen very often in the media. However, Zootopia manages to break these stereotypical character archetypes, surprising the audience at multiple moments throughout the film. Disney’s Zootopia is a production filled with a not so subtle hidden agenda. This movie focuses on specific discriminatory struggles that people face every day. Zootopia is a euphoric city where, “our ancestors first joined together in peace and declared that anyone could be anything” (Judy, Zootopia). Predator and prey are able to live in harmony after predators were able to overcome their biological urge to hunt prey. Once predators overcame their “savage ways”, the world became civilized.…
