Zlata’s diary is a nonfiction book by Zlata Flinicopeno. It sold approximately 80,000 copies and was written between 1991-1993. The author is an incredibly brave, observant, and kind eleven year old girl suffering through war and destruction. I chose to read this book due to it’s similarities to “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
This story takes place in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. Throughout the book we see a child’s outlook on life. At first it seems to be just a little girl’s diary, but as the story progresses we realize it has a much darker theme. Zlata describes what it’s like to hear on the t.v about nearby cities being shelled and attacked. This book is incredibly similar, and even mentions, “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
Slowly but surely, the deadly shells of war make their way to Sarajevo, where Zlata lives. Suddenly, her whole world is turned upside down. Zlata is unable to attend school, visit her grandparents, or talk to her friends. However, she remains optimistic in the hopes that this war will soon pass. But it doesn’t and their living conditions only get worse as time goes on. She and her family are forced to spend hours on end in their cellar to escape the shelling. Their water, electricity, and phone lines are shut off. However, for the duration of this war Zlata remains brave. “But now I can say like the others that I’m brave. I walked bravely through the streets of Sarajevo.” (Page 89). And although she has her lowest points, like any child would in this situation, Zlata quickly picks herself back up and continues to fight.
