According to hedonism, a life is good to the extent that it is filled with happiness (pleasure) and bad to the extent it is filled with unhappiness (pain). It is important to note that hedonists are not referring to physical pleasure as the key to the good life, rather, they are referring to it as enjoyment (attitudinal pleasure). Another way to interpret this is by saying that a good life is having many pleasurable experiences and nothing else. A hedonist might say that if you enjoy doing something, then doing so is pleasurable, so your life is good. Well, according to Robert Nozick, a very famous philosopher, a good life is not just about having a good time, it’s about having a true time.…

The concept of individual sacrifice for the greater good, ‘our land’ and community is an ideal held high in many cultures and this is no different to Chinese culture, past and present. The movie Hero displays this concept during the time in which china was a handful of separate country-states, known as ‘the warring states period’. Although there are the ideals of ‘our land’ in the film there is also the fact that community and uniting china is not an ideal that is liked by all. To display this point the beginning of the film opens with the quote “people give their lives for many reasons. For Friendship, for love, for an ideal.…

In his 1974 book ‘Anarchy, State, and Utopia’, Nozick proposes a famous thought experiment known as the ‘Experience Machine’. This hypothetical machine aims to argue against moral hedonism by proposing that there are more intrinsically important elements to one 's existence than pleasure, namely experience. This essay aims to firstly outline Nozick’s argument, illustrate how it can be seen as a counter-argument to hedonism and finally provide a critique of the conditions of the argument. Nozick introduces his readers to the ‘Experience Machine’ by describing the elements such a machine that could “stimulate your brain so that you would think and feel you were writing a great novel, or making a friend, or reading an interesting book” (292).…

Immersing yourself in 3-D 'what if' scenarios, ideally of your own creation - the early versions of the ultimate in Star Trek holodeck simulations - is the name of the virtual reality game. Of course you already experience virtual reality 24/7/52. Anything and everything you experience is courtesy of your sensory apparatus, your memories, and your overall state of being as a conscious, self-aware being. If all reality is experienced solely within your mind then you already exist in a virtual reality 'world'.…

Having a difficult time understanding the text leaves me feeling a bit at a loss for writing this essay. I am hoping that in my attempt to put something together on paper it will somehow make sense and hold some relation to the task that has been appointed. As I understand the difference between an argument of definition or causality I am left confused after reading the Zizek chapter three times. It seems that the text and his ideas although are supposed to be about ecology tend to take paths into other ideas, that I cannot seem to keep up with. When first reading the chapters I was feeling that his argument was more of an argument of causality; the idea that there is a cause and effect happening in with the word ecology and what it supposed to mean and what it actually means.…

Abstract The three readings of The Matrix, Descartes and Plato discuss the differences concerning the reality of a computer-simulated system, a cave controlled by mankind who are kept captive and a man controlled by his perceptions of demons and evil that all show that life may or may not be real depending on what they each believe. The readings demonstrate the certainty and uncertainty in three areas that deal with skepticism of reality and knowing whether what is experienced everyday is scientifically logical in our minds.
