Many would argue that a murderer shouldn’t receive an award of bravery, however, I believe it is important to view all sides of a story. On that note, I am recommending Zinaida Portnova for The Harper Lee Moral Courage Award. Portnova was a seventh grade student when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, and hated the Germans after an incident where Nazi troops hit her grandmother while confiscating cattle. After this event, she sought justice through joining the Young Avengers, a Belarusian resistance movement with the Komsomol organization. She went on to kill upwards of 100 German soldiers in an operation where she sabotaged actions at a pump, brick factory, and local power plant. Acting against the Nazis, Zinaida Portnova, much like Atticus Finch, risked her life and her innocence. At the age of 14 she began her acts with the Young Avengers, cutting her childhood short. Due to her acts, she was killed at the age of 17 by the secret police associated with Nazi Germany. Portnova went on to be the youngest woman declared Hero of the Soviet Union, and received many awards in her

While much of society and the media blame strange behavior from police officers on race I believe that there’s another explanation.…

Now Krajnc is being charged with criminal mischief -- interference with the use, enjoyment of and operation of property -- and fined $5,000 for showing thirsty pigs compassion. However, being looked down upon or even threatened by many of the officers wouldn't stop Lina from drawing a map for them. Her brother and mother did not want her to draw this map as no one knew what could happen to her in case something went wrong. Still even though she knew the decision would have been considered stupid by many even her family being baffled by her decision she still felt like it needed to be done even stating “Maybe it will bring us news of the war or the men”(171, Sepetys). Over the course of my high school years, I have practically been living with the topic of human genetic engineering. After watching the film Gattaca in my freshman biology class, I immediately clung to this topic, fascinated by what this technology was capable of. But most importantly, the extent to which this could negatively impact the future of American society. I went on to, not only, write a research paper on this topic my sophomore year, but also decided to argue my stance during my AP World History debate. When Junior year rolled around, I, along with my fellow AP Lang peers, were assigned the LRC Speech, in which we were asked to create an argumentative speech for both sides of a controversial issue.…
