Current Events: Mother Released After Four Years of Ten-Year Sentence
The article written by Sarah Ellis entitled, “Mother of Missing Toddler Released from Prison After 4 Years of 10-year Sentence” covers a story that takes place in Columbia, South Carolina and explains a mother’s recent standing in the case of Amir Jennings. In 2012, Zinah Jennings, mother of toddler Amir Jennings, was convicted of unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person in connection with the disappearance of Amir in 2011. First, this article relates to Chapter 12: The Legal System. Zinah Jennings’ case is an example of a plea bargain in which Zinah agreed to remain under supervision until March 30th, 2017. Also, this is a case that required the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard of proof but that was not to be found by prosecutors. This is also an example of a child maltreatment case that was taken to Criminal Court which does not occur often. Secondly, based on one of the testimonies in the case, Zinah Jennings had a history of drug abuse and excessive drinking. Chapter 2: Risk Factors discusses how substance abuse is a parent characteristic that can lead to child maltreatment. Additionally, witnesses stated instances in which Zinah neglected Amir. This type of maltreatment was covered in Chapter 5: Child Neglect. Not only is child neglect harmful to the child and irresponsible of the parent, it can also show whether or not a parent is ready to take care of a child or want to take care of a child.
