Due to the potential link between Zika infections and birth defects, the Allegan County Health Department urges pregnant women to reconsider travel to outbreak areas. The Zika virus is primarily spread by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. This species of mosquito is an aggressive day biter. They can also bite at night. In addition, the virus can be spread sexually from infected men.

Angelique Joynes, MPH, RN, Health Officer cautions that, “Anyone who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consider postponing their trips to the endemic areas as a precautionary measure.
