Zika Disease: Another Reason to Hate Mosquitoes, is an article on the disease Zika. The article chronicles the journey of a 48 year old man, and then tells about the problems we face with Zika. It start with a man who showed up to a clinic with some strange symptoms: a rash that covered his body, high fever, back pain, and an eye infection. This man had been traveling prior to the symptoms in Polynesia and the South Americas. During his extensive travels he felt fine, although he was eaten by mosquitos, which didn’t bother him as he had gotten vaccinated prior to the trip. After coming back later it was found that he had five times the amount of antibodies against the disease Zika. This showed that this man was more than likely suffering from Zika. The troubling thing with Zika is that people infected can go on to develop Guillain–Barre syndrome an auto-immune disease that can cause paralysis and damage nerves. The article goes on to talk about the disease Zika and the problems we face from it. Throughout the world Zika is gaining ground, traveling to other countries. With our current weapons against the disease, it is looking problematic. As of now we don’t have a vaccine against Zika, the mosquitos that bite typically bite during the day so bug nets are much less effective, and even mosquito repellents don’t always work. With the resent uptick in the occurance of the disease, scientists are in a rush to figure it out. Right now little is known about it. There was a case, where the disease seemed to be sexually transmitted, and another where children seem to get it from their mothers. Another problem is we don’t know how common this disease has become, and how far it has spread. Zika, can only be detected in blood samples the first week or so of infection, where the symptoms are
