None of the gods would blame Athena and Hera to retreat right away from their plans after a threat from Zeus, that’s why even Iris sounded surprised on what they were attempting to do. Countless times even Poseidon, god of the sea, has even feared Zeus’s strength. When Hera tries to convince Poseidon to help out the Danaans with her and go against Zeus, his reply was, “Hera, you have spoken a word that should never be spoken. It is not I who would want us all fight against Zeus… for he is much stronger (VIII.199).” Even with multiple gods that would go against Zeus, they still fear for his strength being greater than theirs. That is why they don’t go beyond the boundary that Zeus sets for them. Zeus even knows that his posse’s greater strength than his peers, so he is not afraid of making threats that may anger them. As when he told Iris to tell Poseidon, “ If he will not obey my words…let him consider in his heart and spirit that, no matter if he is strong, he will not withstand my coming… remind him that I am much greater in strength (XV.352).” This would be seen as ann unjust saying from Zeus to the god of the sea, Poseidon. As have stated he used some of those powers of the gods and their involvement in the battle. But also Zeus has played a role in giving strength to which he favored from the Trojans or Argives at the time. He does all of this while he is on top of the highest peak of Mount Ida, Gargaros. It’s like he’s watching a football game and is giving advice to his favorite team to see them win. Like when Zeus threw down a great bolt of thunder into the midst of the Achaeans, for he prefers the Trojans. Before doing the action he made sure that no god or goddesses will give advice to the Argives or Trojans by saying, “If I catch any of you wanting to go help the Trojans or the Danaans, he’ll not come back to Olympus without getting smacked around (VIII.193).” Again he threats the other gods to summit fear in them so they won’t mess up his plans that way he has all the control of the battle 's outcome. He also gives Hector advantages countless times, as when he sent Apollo to help the Trojans after Poseidon left the battle and give courage to Hector to attack once again. Even the Argives know when Zeus is controlling the battle for they notice Zeus was involved in giving Hector courage to get him back in battle, “…some god has saved and delivered Hector…For not without Zeus of the loud thunder does he stand up as a eager champion (XV.356).” That is when again the battle was shifted and the

In this situation, Odysseus was completely powerless against the god; he narrowly survived and almost drowned multiple times. However, he used his strength to pull himself out of the water and hold onto a branch until he could hang onto a piece of the ship to survive. This shows how Odysseus was able to beat out the gods in this particular struggle over his fate; Zeus tried to punish everyone on the ship, but Odysseus was smarter and stronger, and therefore, saved himself from death. The particular words used in this quote from The Odyssey also show a separation between Odysseus and Zeus. Zeus is referred to as “the god” rather than his full name.…

Athena, who was sent by Hera, appears only to Achilles and stresses that he must stop the fighting because if Achilles kills Agamemnon the Achaean Army would have been without their leading commander. The will of Zeus would change without him as the commander of the war and this would make Zeus angry because he told the other gods to stay out of the war. Athena would’ve failed to as an aid to the Achaeans because as an aid she should make sure that everything is in favor of fate. At another point in the battle Odysseus almost kills the son of Zeus, Sarpedon. As Odysseus begins to kill multiple people he starts to go towards Sarpedon “but no, it was not the gallant Odysseus’ fate to finish Zeus’s rugged son with his sharp bronze, so Pallas swung his fury against the Lycian front” (5.774-776).…

Athena’s’ actions that she takes against the Trojans perhaps play the biggest role in their defeat. Many times throughout the Iliad the Trojans call out for help from Zeus only for their prayers to fall on deaf ears because of his wife’s hatred of them. Perhaps Hector would have avoided death by the hand of Achilles if Athena had not disguised herself as his ally. Without Hector fighting on the side of the Trojans they had no chance against the forces of Agamemnon and his great army. Athena’s betrayal against Hector eventually leads to the destruction of…
