One day, Zeus decided to give all of the creatures on earth what he called "differences." The Gods were bored of watching both humans and animals eat, sleep, and wander around. Zeus called for Epimetheus, another God who was not busy at the time, and gave him two boxes. The big box was filled with Zeus's differences. Zeus told Epimetheus to pass them out to the creatures on earth. When Epimetheus asked Zeus what was in the second smaller box, Zeus would not tell him what was inside it, but instead only told him not to open it unless he was instructed to.

Soon Epimetheus was on earth holding a box on each of his shoulders. Epimetheus's shoulders were staring to hurt because on earth he no longer had the strength of a God. Epimetheus sorted through the box of differences, giving each animal a difference that he thought best suited them. One the box was empty, the animals left. The sun was beginning to set on Earth, so Epimetheus found a place to sleep. He was soon interrupted by a man who asked Epimetheus what difference was saved for him. When Epimetheus realized that he forgot a difference for man, which was Zeus's favorite creature, he started to worry. He could not give him what was in the small box for fear that Zeus would punish him with lightning bolts striking out

As revenge for stealing fire and tricking him, Zeus had an eagle forever chew at Prometheus’ liver while he was bound to a rock (Lenzi and Mitcham 1523). Zeus was furious that Prometheus gave man fire, so he made a decision to inflict a dreadful punishment on Prometheus and the humans (Hunt 1). Zeus despised liars, oathbreakers and those who show no hospitality, it is generally assumed that a couple who lived in poverty showed kindness, compassion and gave Zeus their full attention (which others did not), as Zeus disguised himself as a travelling mortal, those who did not show kindness, compassion and hospitality were punished by death. Throughout Greek literature, the gods dictate everything; from stirring a body of water to sink a ship to transforming people into inanimate objects and sometimes animals, the gods don’t feel the need to completely destroy their humans when their behavior is not up to par with the gods expectations. The use of transformations rather than destruction becomes particularly evident in The Bacchae and The Metamorphoses. In The Metamorphoses, there are several instances in the lives of the characters in which a disheartening, or even destructive, event takes place and the gods take the situation and turn it into something favorable. Likewise, The Bacchae focuses heavily on transformations, however, instead of the transformations creating something…

In Hesiod’s Theogony Zeus is not a just God to his people in the way that he punishes everyone for the acts that only one man committed, rather than just punishing a single individual. For example, Zeus is an extremely vengeful God and this is displayed at the Trick at Mecone as well as in the creation of Pandora. At the Trick at Mecone when Prometheus deceives Zeus by placing a pile of ox beef disguised in intestines and a pile of bones disguised in shiny fat for Zeus to choose from so the Gods and the mortals can negotiate the sacrifice that will be given (Hesiod, Theogony, 540-543), Zeus becomes angry at Prometheus for his trickery and not only punishes Prometheus for deceiving him but “wouldn’t give the power of weariless fire to the…
