SEVEN

“Let’s get this started, shall we?” Zero clapped his hands and rubbed them together, shaking the square rimmed glasses that sat on the bridge of his crooked nose.

I stood in the back corner and watched as the four boys, all barely men, who entered after me took their seats directly in front of Zero’s desk, I made no motion to sit down and Zero continued with his debrief.

“You four,” he addresses them and gestured with his hand, “will be joined by Agent -“

“Seven,” I cut him off before he can say something else, he looks at me amused, as did the boys, however, more so with suspicion, I ignored them all.

“May I ask why we are gaining a team member, Sir?” one of the boys asked.

“I’ll explain in a minute,” Zero responded, blowing off the question, “I would like

“I won’t work unless I have your word it is a temporary relocation,” my eyes narrow at him.

“Fine,” he spat, his frustration evident.

“Zero, Sir, we don’t want some girl on our team,” Alex says.

“Seven is not some girl, she is the best in the agency,” Zero defends me.

“She’s the best?” Alex points a finger at me.

Zero only nods, a smile twitching on his lips.

“Better than us?” Alex scoffs.

“You’ll have to find out,” he answers coyly.

“I want a straight answer, Sir, I don’t want some wimpy girl who I have to carry around over my shoulder,” Alex exclaims.

I hold my tongue, and curl my fist, Zero, however, beats me to it, only adding more the shroud of mystery that now surrounds me, “Alex Agent Seven here, is far more than you could ever bargain for,” his voice grows cold, “Remember boys, looks are meant to deceive,” he eyes each one.

“We don’t want Agent Seven on our team,” Connor speaks

“Are we there yet?” Balic complained, leaning over the driver’s seat where Vik wrestled with the steering column of the massive crawler. They’d ambushed the soldiers inside, then used the vehicle to sneak past the main gates. “Don’t make me pull this dump over,” Vik countered, jamming the hand brake forward, and bringing the crawler to a grinding halt. A wall of Imperial soldiers awaited Havoc Squad, their bolts pinging off the armored hull over the military vehicle.…

Video games are arguably even less associated with storytelling than comics are, with some critics believing “that the video-game form is incompatible with traditional concepts of narrative” (Bissel, 93). Where the medium truly excels, however, is with its capacity for immersion. Like how the addition of sound allowed filmgoers to not just watch the action but hear it, “Every new medium that has been invented … has increased the transporting power of narrative” (Rose, 36). Where readers of books and viewers of movies are passive, gamers take an active role in their narratives. In games like Mass Effect this means making key decisions that affect the development of the plot, but in games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us, this…

I miss them already. Despite the freezing cold snow and the nipping air, we had a lovely Christmas break. As I inspect my child, now grown with children of her own, holding tickets back to their home, longing envelopes me. Hoards of people push past, unaware of my pain, on their own schedules and heading toward different trains, talking and texting on their cell phones. My family boards, time as if in slow-motion, and waves goodbye until I see them again.…

I was born 24 years ago as the daughter of a Zeugitae in the city Athens. I had a simple childhood life, learning my education at home from my mother. In the 13th year of my life, I became an adult and was to be married to one of the sons from a neighbor of ours, and left my own family to live with his. After a few years of happily living together with our son, my husband and some of the other males in the city were recruited by the army and sent to war in Arginusae against the Spartans. After what felt like forever of being separated from my dearly beloved and many days of praying to the gods for my husband to stay safe, he had finally returned home to us.…
