There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808.…

What stands out to me the most, and of what I think is most inspiring and remarkable, is the very notion that success is dependent upon the decisions one makes. The reason being that I have experienced such a thing in my life, and therefore believe it to be true. Such an experience is of when, in the 8th grade and as of last year, my grades had began to drop due to my being unambitious and putting off work until the last minute. After having discovered the failing grades in my classes, I became rather discouraged and disappointed. Hoping to change that, I had either of the two options, which were to begin prioritizing my school work over trivial hobbies and activities, or of only completing the bare minimum so as to gain what is deemed as acceptable grades.…

Better in a Dream The idea of finishing high school, going to college, getting married, and having children is along the lines of a perfect life. Many people may recognize this undertaking as the “American Dream”. In Barbara Ehrenreich’s work “The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream” she opens up with the fact that many white collar Americans seem to be afflicted by poverty and in difficulty of, finding a job just as much as blue-collar Americans (260). It does not surprise me when she goes on about the fact that white collar citizens are not seen as being incompetent since they followed all the rules in hopes of their dreamy life (261). Blue collar poverty has been viewed as the standard, while you might not expect white collar workers to face the same issues.…
