Jesus Christ: a celestial, heavenly figure shrouded in our contemporary culture as a peaceful prophet whose sole purpose was divine salvation. This representation of Jesus that has permeated throughout history is entirely wrong in Aslan’s perspective. Aslan portrays Jesus as a politically conscious revolutionary who in fact supported violence to a certain extent. Now when Aslan’s critically detested words entered my mind, like most self-proclaimed critics, I mocked this man for his asininity. Soon, I realized the plausibility of Aslan’s conception of Jesus. Aslan’s Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth was an eye opener and really helped me assume a new perspective of the world in which we exist today. There are only three things Aslan says we know for certain about Jesus: he is a Jew, he started a Jewish movement, and he was crucified for his supposedly seditious actions. Now we must remember that Aslan’s view of Jesus is wholly extrapolated from his interpretation on the New Testament and historical facts supplied by primary sources of the time in which Jesus lived. After reading this book, one thing became clear: you can never trust what anyone says unless you view the context of that specific comment an objective viewpoint. I believe it was my history teacher who once told me to question everything. At one point while reading this book I questioned the existence of God myself ? Now I am a devout Hindu who prays on a regular basis, but who really am I praying to? Aslan’s words led me to view the Gods whom I preach in a purely historical way. He motivated me to find the source of my religion. The entirety of this book is inspirational/motivational to me as a person coexisting in the 21st century with many deceitful, unreliable human beings clouding innocent minds with
