What is the difference between hunting humans and hunting animals? One would think that hunting humans is wrong and unethical. But for two world renowned hunters, they have two differing perspectives on this issue of hunting humans. While they both are intelligent men; one tends to approach the issue more ethically than the other. Zaroff looks at hunting humans for his own self interest, while Rainsford looks at it from a selfless view for the human population and thinks it is unethical. Rainsford and Zaroff both like to hunt but each character likes to hunt something different, which causes Rainsford to have ethics and Zaroff to be intelligent.
There are a couple ways that Zaroff as well as Rainsford are alike. One is that they both enjoy hunting many different types of animals, as well as hunting all over the world. As Rainsford said in the book, “That Cape buffalo is the largest I ever saw (22). Another is at the beginning of the story neither of the characters appreciate any type of animal life an example of that is when Rainsford asks, “Who cares how the jaguar feels” (18). Rainsford said “Hunting, Good God, General Zaroff, What you speak of is murder” (25). Rainsford says that by reason of what General Zaroff is doing is not right. The general also does not see that what he is doing is wrong. An additional quote to show that Rainsford is ethical is when he says “But they are men,’ said Rainsford hotly” (26). He is saying that all life human life matters. Rainsford also was enraged in the story after he found out that General Zaroff was hunting humans. An example of that is when Rainsford said “Civilized?
