Ann Burden is a 16-year-old girl who believed she was the only one to survive this nuclear war. Her parents disappeared while searching for others so she was stuck living alone on a small farm. One year later, a man in a suit approaches the farm. The man is John Loomis, a chemist who helped make a radiation-proof suit. Ann moves him into her house, and she later thinks about marrying John, and wants children. John gets sicker, and sicker. Ann prays for him to get better. When John recovers he orders her to plant wheat and beets to preserve seed stock. In this book John Loomis is a destructive scientist. He first seems like a good person until he turns on Ann. Ann is just a sweet teenage girl with a love for nature. What the book taught me is that a persons desire for power, control, and to survive can make you evil. This is what happened to John in the book Z for Zachariah. Z for Zachariah was a very suspenseful book. As soon as I started it, it had my stomach in a knot. This is an amazing book that shows the strengths and weaknesses of humanity and the horrors of what could happen in life. The book is not only, suspenseful, but is sad. Ann may have survived a nuclear war, but she lost her family and was stuck living with a psychotic man. I would recommend this book to anyone; it was a very good
