Qwo Li-Driskell, a professor of Gender and indigenous studies, is an activist for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual) and queer rights. His patriotism propelled him to be an activist for aboriginal people. The Cherokee people have been natives of North America, well before the Europeans expedited into the Americas. Driskell’s work also focuses on the need to spread awareness about the Cherokee culture and, subsequently, the need to provide them with equal rights in the United States.…
Most people believe “El Chupacabra” is a myth while others don't. Although many have claimed that they have seen it, they don’t have proof. It may just be some stray dog, or canine-type creature. One of the pieces of evidence goes something like this "It can change colors at will, has a hairy, reptilian body with spines all along its back and an obsession with blood. El Chupacabra translated into English means "the goat-sucker," because that's exactly what it does.…
history in Hispaniola and beyond. Yunoir’s rewriting of history is accomplished in several ways. One notable way is through the format of the book, which uses footnotes in order to add histories of the Dominican Republic, a fantasy character, Trujillo, etc. This format at first could signal an academic text “in which there is a separation between the content and the historical data that inform it,” but the footnotes in this novel instead provide an insight into the Dominican History that non-Hispanic readers may not have access to. Yunoir, and Díaz by extent, create a collapse “between [the] historiographical and fictional registers by inextricably blending the two” (Mahler 120).…
The film “Century of Genocide in the Americas: the Residential School Experience” is a testimony to the atrocity and cruelty the white people incurred upon the Indians. The film shortly portrays the bizarre picture of the reservation where each and every day the Indians were killed, maimed, raped and denied human rights in varied forms. The film cites the second article of the 1948 Genocide Convention “Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group…” It conveys the message that white people committed genocide on the Indians. The writer of the article “Gee, You Don’t Seem like an Indian from the Reservation.”…
The Jungle, a book about the tragedies and hardships a newly immigrated Lithuanian family goes through during their time in America, has become an important part of our history and a must read for anyone interested in the history of our country. Written by Upton Sinclair, this novel does a wonderful job describing the life of immigrants in the early 1900s. It was a very controversial book during it's time, as it brought up social issues that concerned many people. An example of an issue brought up was that of the meat packing industry, a corrupt industry at the time.…
“”True,’ say the children, ‘it may happen That we die before our time.” (Browning 37-38) It is expected of older folks to pass away, after all, they have lived their life. It is not common, however, for people to fall into their graves when they reside in the age range of mere children. Many of the little employees work to the point that they die long before it should have been their time because of the exhaustion from their day jobs. “‘It is good when it happens… that we die before our time.”…
Every culture has urban legends and Hispanic culture is no exception. These legends can be anything from terrifying ghost stories to heavily believed superstition. Some of the most popular legends would be those of El Chupacabra and La Llorona, which are not only known by those of hispanic heritage, but internationally as well. The majority of these legends have been around for centuries but as the years have gone by, they have turned into cautionary tales and lessons for the younger generations. These descriptions are not meant to prove the existence of the supernatural beings and cryptics, but to showcase the legends that permeate the Hispanic/Latino culture.…
America was built on the belief that there could be jobs out there for anyone. But what happens when big bosses decide to cut cost here and there so that they could make the most profit? The workers have to start sacrificing their safety and wellbeing just to put food on the table. We, as Americans, live in a society today that has regulations set in place to ensure that every working citizen has rights. People fail to understand the history behind what it took for American workers to have these right, and Death in the Haymarket by James Green, explains the history behind American Capitalism.…

It's known for its beautiful scenery and dune-backed sandy beach. Tons of people around the world come to Rocky Point every year to unwind and have a good time. There are several reasons why Puerto Peñasco was such a memorable trip.…
In reviewing the poem Isla, written by Virgil Suarez, I believe that Suarez is speaking about his life and the challenges that they had to endure while in the Caribbean’s. The first image that I see use is Godzilla, which I see it as describing how he and his family may have felt moving from a place that they once called home and then been forced to live in a foreign place. The writer references Godzilla because he wants his readers to see how the mother and child felt being somewhere he did not use to, feeling “unwanted, exiled, how you move from one country to another where nobody you” (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). I think the writer is trying to express how his family may have felt when they left their country in order to have a better life.…
quote - “The hallways and staircases are painted slate gray, the ceilings are low, and there are combination locks on many of the doors.” (1-2) Imagery- Schlosser’s use of the device relates to his topic by having the readers feel and visualize the impact the food we eat has on our lives. The stylistic device demonstrates how future generations will find our generation buried under fast food wrappers. He chose to present information in this way to appeal to the reader’s senses. Schlosser wants to influence his reader by emphasizing that fast food has become a social norm in America.…
For others, that day may seem to be looming closer and closer as they advance into their 70s. Despite how you may feel about death, we can all concur that this will happen to all of us, and how we approach death, will vary from person to person. In the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Alborn and “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” by Leo Tolstoy paints the journey of two men and their inevitable date with the grim reaper. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss the similarities and the differences between the trials and conflicts, these men endured on their journey.…
How would life be in the Dominican Republic? Would the Geography affect you? The geography of the Dominican Republic; the different climatic zones, its location, and mountains along with water sources that surround it are important to its country.…
Identify the problem While companies have been outsourcing various activities for centuries, in recent decades, the increased growth of products and services that businesses have moved offshore has not only contributed to increased global economic growth and prosperity but also has faced much controversy and debate while Americans today attempt to protect the domestic business against offshoring. The overall problem includes transportation costs, disruption in innovation and productivity, reduction of quality of products and services, job displacement, and more importantly the loss of 3.3 million domestic jobs (Sao & Gupta, 2013). From an ethical standpoint, Kantian ethics states that people should never treat other as a “means to end, but…
In the case, the Alejandra and David Barstow, the two journalists who followed and aired out the story is the first stakeholder. The two were very critical in this case of Wal-Mart lawless mechanism of trying to shape out an empire in Mexico such that they were applauded by the media and business world. They were influenced by the power of driving out the vice of corruption and urgency of maintaining ethical business across the globe. Since they are Journalists and before they aired the episode, they had substantial evidence, Wal-Mart should involve and collaborate with them in ensuring that the company is back on track. This will yield more benefits since stakeholders will not be withdrawing their shares due to fear.…
