I found this Yakudoshi party fun and very informative celebration (not to mention the great meal my wife and I had). I had an idea of the different types or the variety of food the Japanese culture has to offer, however, I think the most valuable lessons here were learning about the culture. I was fortunate enough to hear how the older generation and the younger generation view the practice of Yakudoshi, compare their views on food, hear and learn about some Japanese etiquettes (especially in the use of chopsticks as I described it in the discussion experience below), and hear their views on interracial marriage. Although the young Japanese couple had a hard time convincing their children to consume some of their meal, watching the young…
This style of governing harshly punished people and ignited fear within the population. Legalism in the Qin dynasty placed all power on the law, and because the emperor was in charge of enforcing the law, all of the power was in his hands, resulting in a totalitarian regime that was very unpopular with the Chinese people (Legalism). Shi Huangdi moved all of the formerly powerful nobles to the capital city of Xianyang, ensuring that he could watch everything to prevent revolt (British Museum). The emperor also started many expensive government-run projects, which meant that the people had to be taxed more and more, especially for the creation of his palace and tomb (Qin Dynasty). Shi Huangdi was unpopular with the peasants; he made them pay high taxes and work long and hard on projects, such as the Great Wall (British Museum).…

Oct. 26 at about noon, BYU-Idaho was nearly put into danger after 19-year-old Joshua David Tanner posted on the social media app Yik Yak about potentially shooting the school. “I’m going to shoot up BYUI Monday,” Tanner said in his post. When Yik Yak users create an account, they agree to specific rules which include not using the app to bully or target others, and that if a user is to come across any type of post that is threatening or offensive to others, they should down vote the post, or report it.…

Chinese immigrants started coming to the US due to the gold rush of the 1848 and were at first received with open arms. However, within a few decades public opinions towards the Chinese as a whole shifted dramatically, climaxing at the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which forbade all immigration to the United States by Chinese people. This law was the first piece of legislation that discriminates against people from a certain country of origin that was on the federal level. The irony comes from the fact that this was during the Progressive Period, where people actively tried to better the lives of everyone in society through reforms and protests, yet they tried to destroy the lives of Chinese workers. The reason that the Americans who had initially welcomed the Chinese turned on them was due to their own negative stereotypes of the Chinese that portrayed as anti-American, a concern for their livelihoods due to the economic troubles and large number of jobs being taken by the Chinese, and misdirected…
This allowed Mao to pursue large-scale purges on any who opposed him, without any consequences from Shanghai. This generated so much terror than no one would dare disobeyed him from now on. Those tortured often shouted names at random, and those named are also tortured and killed, sometimes by tearing their heart form their chest. Torture victims go to Shanghai to plead their case, but the CCP is powerless to do anything. Stalin approves of the purges and lets Mao continues his disgusting methods of purging dissidents.…

The Zheng He voyages, also known as the “treasure voyages”, were a series of seven Ming dynasty naval voyages that occurred between 1405 and 1433CE. The voyages got the name Zheng He from the commander of the fleet, Admiral Zheng He. The fleet was ordered by Zhu Di, the Yongle Emperor, around the turn of the 15th century. All of the voyages took place during the Yongle era, except for the last, which was launched during the Xuande era. The voyages traveled much of the South China Sea, as well as visiting the Indian Ocean and other distant locations.…
Juror’s Statement Adnan Syed has been put on trial for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Not only has he been charged with life in a high security prison, but also has maintained his innocence for his whole trial and sentencing. Even though Jay’s testimony had been changed slightly over time, the story itself is consistent. Adnan killed Hae by strangulation and Jay helped Adnan bury her body in Leakin Park. Even though I state that Adnan is not innocent, he should not have been convicted with the evidence presented at trial.…
The murder of Hae Min Lee has always been a very mysterious case that leads to millions of dead ends. There is few evidence of anyone doing it, but Adnan Syed was ultimately convicted for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed was the ex-boyfriend of Hae and some say he wanted revenge by killing her with his bare hands, but Adnan can’t defend himself because he has no recollection of that day. They are all wrong, because Adnan Syed is innocent. First of all, Adnan does not have a good motive for killing Hae.…
Although he brought glory to ancient China, Shi Huangdi was a cruel leader who used his power mold Chinese culture and society to meet his desires. Shi Huangdi enforced strict laws and commands and made unnecessary punishments and restrictions. “He outlawed all local customs, festivals, and folksongs as well as local religious practices,” (Graham, 337). Huangdi acted as a tyrant in numerous ways who practiced autocracy; imposing harsh laws, severe punishments, and heavy levies upon his people. Moreover, Shi Huangdi forced many people into his pitiless, massive labour conscription, where they eventually died meeting the demands of the emperor.…
Throughout To Live by Yu Hua, there is a metaphor between the disease of Jiazhen and communism’s suppressive force. The author also creates a contradiction. This contradiction occurs because Yu Hua creates instances where the communist government is helpful to the lives of the people, but also creates instances where the communist government is not helpful and damages the lives of its people, like when Chunsheng is brutally beaten by servants of the government. Both of these literary techniques are then used to show the author’s mixed feelings toward the communist government. By characterizing Jiazhen as a sickly women confined by her disease, Yu Hua creates an extended metaphor that relates Jiazhen’s disease suppressing her ability to communism’s…
