There are many factors that play a role in influencing whether someone decides to commit suicide or not. Nearly everyone experiences suicidal thoughts at some point in their life, but thankfully, most people do not follow through with these thoughts. Everyone deals with tough times, but some people have dealt with tougher situations when it comes to life circumstances, trauma, mental/ physical illness, social issues, and the ability to cope with depressive emotions. “Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24” (“Youth Suicide Statistics”). The combination of loneliness and fear can lead a person to contemplate suicide. Bipolar disorder involves fluctuations in mood from states of severe depression to elevations in mood. These mood fluctuations can make it difficult to maintain a balanced life and can cause suicidal thoughts. Major depression is a leading cause of suicide throughout the world. People who do not treat their depression have a greater risk for following through with suicide. Individuals with major depression are typically genetically wired in a way that makes it difficult to feel happiness in life and pleasure. Schizophrenia has an array of symptoms that makes it very difficult to function in life. Schizophrenia can serve as a major challenge due to the fact that medications to treat this illness carry several severe side effects. Bullying is another cause of suicide, especially among teenagers. The three main causes of suicide are mental illness, bullying, and ignoring the signs of suicide.
