However, the thing about sea sponges is that once it has absorbed something, only so much can be wrung back out. That is why the experiences of our youth are so important, because no matter how hard you squeeze, you will carry the remnants of your past with you for the rest of your life.

In the film Stand by Me, the character Teddy is the perfect example of a sponge that cannot be rid of it’s contents. Growing up, Teddy lived with his father: a World War II veteran who had returned from war disturbed and a raging alcoholic. In fits of drunken hysteria,

During his Nobel Peace Prize speech, “Memory, Hope, and Despair”, Elie Weisel said, “The opposite of the past is not the future but the absence of future; the opposite of the future is not the past but the absence of past. The loss of one is equivalent to the sacrifice of the other.” This quote really captures how I feel about the past; without it, one cannot have a future, which is the reason I find my memories more important than my dreams. In that same speech, Elie Weisel also said, “Without memory, our existence would be barren and opaque.”…

In the first five chapters of the novel Obasan, there was only a slight sense of negativeness, and in chapter 6 to 10, it becomes clear. There is a stronger sense of negativeness when Naomi expresses her emotions for the first time such as anger, hatred, frustration, and discomfort. Naomi reveals what her family experienced in the past, and this information certainly explains the dark, and delicate atmosphere from the previous chapters. In chapter 7, Naomi finds a parcel Aunt Emily has sent to her, and inside of the parcel, there are several packages of documents. What those documents from the parcel contain are unimaginable; they are the absolute evidence of the terrible mistreatments of the Canadian Government that Naomi’s family, and the…

Given my life and the stage that I am currently at in making a transition from a teenager to a young adult, “Returning to What’s Natural” by Amelia Baxter-Stoltzfus was the logical essay to analyze. Amelia’s essay provides a central belief that I feel is not only relevant to me, but also many other college students. The author’s belief is that we have to continually grow and change as a person while still remembering where we come from. Although not easily noticeable, “Returning to What’s Natural” does display support to the central belief.…

“The beauty of standing up for your rights is others will see you standing up and stand up as well” is Cameron’s favorite quote by Cassandra Duffy, a quote that conveys just a bit of his kind perspective. Cameron Hondolero is a seventeen-year-old senior who grew up in the state of Washington, primarily in the city of Kent. He is of Filipino and American descent; his family consists of his parents and his older sister Josie, who plays a huge role in his life. He describes his family as “crazy and scattered”, but that won’t stop him from pursuing all his dreams. In “Border Crossing in the USA,” Donna Gaines claims that “[t]he concept of adolescence, our assumptions about young people’s preparedness to handle life, and the laws we created to protect them, infantilize youth at a time when they are increasingly called upon to care for themselves” . Nancy Lesko moves Gaines ’s quote one step further when she concludes that “Gaines’s emphasis on how the lived realities of youth are in conflict with adult conceptions of them must be demonstrated through empirical studies”. Lesko’s statement is an extension of her call for educators, scholars, and policy makers to replace their traditional views of adolescence with post-colonial views.…

Donald M. Murray’s memoir, “The Stranger in the Photo Is Me,” ascertains the idea that life changes as we change. He explicitly enforces this idea by inundating his audience with his impactful usage of both antithesis and juxtapositions to express his belief of innocence versus experience. Murray narrows the idea of innocence versus experience by ultimately speaking on his positive self versus what has happened in the intervening years, and how once he became older, he became much more aware of what has happened. As Murray goes deeper into his argument, his use of antithesis and juxtapositions become clear during his shift from alluding to memories in his younger age to transforming into someone he never thought he would become, and ultimately referring to himself as a “stranger.”…

Whilst growing up and going through puberty, one is expected to go through many awkward, downright mortifying experiences before making it through to the other side, the side of young adulthood. The cracking of voices, the sudden acquisition of body odor, and the occasional menstrual mishap while wearing one’s favorite pair of jeans are trying but normal experiences for the pubescent population. Sure, one is likely to remember some of those experiences forever and to have learned lifelong lessons. What if though, someone goes through something acutely distressing and takes that experience in as a lifelong lesson? Almost everybody makes mistakes, and often these mistakes can be used to grow and to prevent future complications. In “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the doctor creates a serum that allows one to temporarily regain his or her youth. The subjects of his experiment are given a unique opportunity to reflect on prior choices that have led them to their miserable lives. They get caught continually repeating old mistakes, and fail to use their second chance to learn and improve themselves. Through the symbolic significance of Dr. Heidegger’s rose and his mirror along with his unvarying characterization, author Nathaniel Hawthorne effectively asserts a theme that in order to move forward with success, one must first learn from…

People learn a great deal from their experiences as they can change their entire outlook and attitude towards life as well as their communication with others. Perception directly effects communication and explains how the same message can be interpreted differently by people. The relationships we have with people through communication enable us to have similar perceptions of the world, however no two people can see the world in exactly the same way because of differences in their fields of experience. There are experiences that we share together such as, love, the instinct to survive, the desire for health, knowledge and happiness but each individual has events in life that make them experience these things differently.
