Youth For Hospice

I became involved with Hospice in June of 2011 after my swim coach Keith Furey came to the end of his 10-year battle with cancer and was home with Hospice care. I have founded, and am president of the Nyack High School chapter named “Teens for Hospice” that is a satellite group of “Youth for Hospice” of which I am also a member. I want to continue to bring awareness to my fellow student body and Teens of Rockland County, about how we can contribute, support and help this specialized team of people who give choice, dignity, courage, and hope to people and continue to educate them that every little bit of effort counts, to make a difference, and that they can be part of a even bigger picture. I want to establish a club that will remain in place after I graduate, to continue fundraising, and be there as a support group for kids in families who are dealing with a serious illness in our school and community. Most of all to let kids know what Hospice is really about, unless they have had first hand experience in their lives most are ignorant to what it is, the services it offers, the comfort it brings, and the fun ways to raise money for such a worthy cause, for example Dance a thon, Haunt for Hospice, Hugs for Hospice, Bounce for Hospice and many …show more content…
As for Youth for Hospice, I hope to move into a position to continue the growth of the club, to establish more satellite groups within our counties school district, to keep representation from Nyack High School, and to have become a true Hospice

I had the opportunity be one of over 400 volunteers for the event, which allowed me to gain skills for my potential future in the field of sport management, and possibly, other related fields. The volunteer sport organization, or the organization that provided the opportunity for the community was the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, which is an organization that creates events and fundraisers in order to support the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

My service and leadership has not only given me experiences I will cherish for a lifetime, but has also enabled me to become an advocate for others and to promote issues that are of importance. In my school my leadership has helped bridge gaps between people. One example of how I accomplish this is with the Cultural Awareness Club I initiated. As a result of the club, my peers consider our school to be more inclusive of them and our student body more accepting of diversity. The outlook of the club is that people who are immigrants or who have culture at home feel believe they are less discriminated against; these individual consider our student body to be one that values inclusivity.…
