We are living in a culture where far too many young men and women are easily distracted and allow their dreams to succumb to societal pressures and pleasures of life. Young children tend to have a sense of resilience and normally start out with big dreams, ideas of changing the world, and making their mark. Over time, their self-confidence is undermined by the media, parents, friends, adversaries and their own inner voices. A substantial amount of research has proven the benefits from “best practices” of youth mentoring programs. Research states that 59 percent of mentored teenagers earn better grades. 27 percent of mentored youth are less likely to begin using alcohol. 52 percent of mentored youth are less likely to skip school. Youth with mentors have increased likelihood of going to college, better attitudes toward school, increased social and emotional development, and improved self-esteem. …show more content…
Young people today need a multi-dimensional care in order to successfully mature into well rounded individuals. As we face their reality, not every child is placed on earth with a stable home. Today’s youth are faced with many family problems i.e. divorce, death of a parent, substance abuse, or even homelessness just to name a few. Research confirms that quality mentor relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. Youth mentoring provides an extra outlet for these adolescents when a parent, sibling, or friend is not available, or even able to make the best choices for the adolescent. Youth mentoring is needed now more than ever. Fortunately, there are many different types and styles of mentorship available for our youth to engage in. Some are: one- on- one mentoring, resource-base mentoring, group mentoring and training-based
