Tranquility, love, determination. What do these 3 words mean to you? In the poems that I analyzed, they will make you think about those 3 words and what they personally mean to you and your life.These 3 poems use many poetic devices such as, Imagery, Enjambment, Similes and Metaphors to leave the readers at a cliffhanger, wondering what happens next.The 3 words in the first sentence stated the themes of the poems I read. These poems use lots of figurative language to help the reader get a better understanding of the poems’ meanings.In order to implicate the poem’s meaning through figurative language Thylias Moss includes a line within their poem “She’s Florida Missouri But She Was Born in Valhermosa and Lives in Ohio” in which a simile is used to describe the mother’s wild hair to the moon “that has wild hair soliciting the moon like blue-black clouds touring.” (Stanza 1 Lines 2&3) This is evidence is describing what the mom’s physical features were like. This evidence is important because it goes into deeper description of what this hardworking mother looked like and it gave me a better description of what she was like. This piece of evidence is connected to my thesis because it describes how using figurative language can help paint a better picture in your head. Similarly, In order to use figurative language to convey love, Max Ritvo includes a line within their poem “Your Voice in the Chemo” in which the poet uses enjambment to draw the reader in and leaves them wondering what happens until they read the next stanza. “In the center of the cliff is a round dry fountain of polished stone. By seizing my whole body up” (Stanza 2 Lines 1&2). This evidence is about how the poet is contemplating love but feels like they are on the edge of a cliff not knowing which way to turn and which way is right. This evidence is important because it portrays that love can put you in different mindsets but contemplating love too much can put you in the wrong one.
