Your Private Thoughts Become Cast in Stone In this chapter Dr. Gottman is describing how out “negative inner script” can lead to a downward spiral. If the four horsemen are taking root in your marriage, you are more likely to have negative thoughts. After studying many couples he saw two major categories of thought: thoughts of innocent victimhood or righteous indignation. Now we will look at the two categories more intently. Usually someone displaying signs of defensiveness or stonewalling think of himself or herself as the victim. Gottman argues that there is a benefit to this thought or people wouldn’t think it. The most glaring problem with the innocent victim mindset is that it allows mental freedom of responsibility. Obviously, if it is the other person’s entire fault there is no need for you to do anything to fix it. Righteous indignation is usually felt by someone with contempt or a stonewaller. There are similarities with the innocent victim mindset, but this one includes hostility and contempt. To …show more content…
This happens when there is an overload of thoughts, emotions, and chemicals. Hostility, defensiveness, and withdrawal are some of the common effects of flooding. There is also no certain threshold for flooding; it typically differs case to case. Some factors that do play into flooding are gender and stress outside of marriage. It is good to note that when someone is flooded it’s virtually impossible to have constructive discussions. The body has been designed by God to react in amazing ways when under stress or threat. Our bodies respond to sensory data received, and that affects blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. All of this acts as a feedback loop, which can lead to increased bodily responses. Dr. Gottman and his team monitored couples during discussions and they documented the findings. The results were pretty interesting and just prove that the body does speak to

On August 17, 1998 President Bill Clinton delivered a speech to the American public addressing an inappropriate relationship with a former White House Intern, Monica Lewinsky. In comparison to Robert M. Eisingers “The Political Non-Apology” Clinton 's public apology has some of the characteristics of a full apology but, is predominantly a non-apology. Although, acknowledges the offense committed, he minimizes his offense throughout the speech and plays the victim card in attempts to potentially restore his reputation. At some points he attempts to apologize, but his choice of words diminish the effectiveness of his apology and his form of non-apologizing is used to his advantage. Clinton appears to meet some of the criteria of a full apology;…

It would require a great deal of practice and patience, but I believe I could accomplish the state of mind and emotion referred to as "radical forgiveness". For many years I responded to situations as a victim, believing I wasn't good enough or blaming others for my choices. As an adult, I try to assume responsibility but old habits die hard and it is a struggle at times to push the victim away. When I consciously choose to not be a victim it is empowering.…

Even The Wildest Beast Can Be Tamed Everyone is guilty of feeling resentment, whether it is towards someone, something, or yourself. More often than not, the recognition of one 's error is not until there is time for reflection. Needless to say, everyone acts by impulse, neglecting the rational thought. Much like Macbeth (main character from the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare): his actions are determined by his impulses rather than sane reasoning.…

The third pearl of wisdom I learned from the course textbook is the Holding Principle, which is essentially “Never act until you are sure that what you are about to do is not sin” (Adams, 1979 p. 31). Although it is a basic understanding to not act in sin, putting it into practice can be hard. Temptation is a very real tool the devil uses to ensnare Christians and non-Christians alike. It entangles people in webs of deception, lies, manipulation, and compromise. An example of this would be committing adultery.…

Denial seems to be a quite popular form of defense mechanisms. People will often make excuses that don’t truly reflect their actions. Instead of being honest with themselves, people will explain that they only act in negative ways in particular circumstances when their explanations turn out to be false. Another popular defense mechanism is displacement. I believe displacement is one of the most easy to see, as it is portrayed in action movies constantly and in real life I can find many people at the gym that are displacing their negative energy.…

I think this is one of my strongest qualities—I DO enjoy figuring things out for myself, I’m incredibly independent and I’m always doing something (at work, that is). I do tend to ask a bazillion questions, some of them a little bit stupid, just because I want to make sure I do the job EXACTLY how my manager/boss wants it done.…

However, the world often views forgiveness as a weakness, or an inhibitor in progression, as it encourages more mistakes in marriages. Yet according to the doctrine of Christ, both repentance and forgiveness are required to be able to form a healthy relationship with our Heavenly Father and also a healthy relationship with others.…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
