7a. What is your most meaningful community service experience to date? (350 characters)

My time abroad volunteering in clinics in the town of Villa Allende within the province of Cordoba, Argentina is my most memorable community service experience. Through this experience, I was able to immerse myself in an environment of service, fully examine and acknowledge the needs of those whom I was serving, and develop an expression of sensitivity to their situation. Additionally, throughout my time at the clinics, I underwent a transformative experience that enlightened me in the sense that I observed the vast disparity of healthcare between developed and developing countries; quality care in such developing countries is prominently split between

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

I have volunteered for the BPSOS health fair each October for the past three years. The BPSOS (Boat People SOS) is a nonprofit organization focused on helping refugees. This organization sponsors free health fairs held in Norcross, GA with many health services for anyone who stops by. The services include influenza vaccines, various types of screenings, and physical exams. I volunteered with doctors and nurse practitioners at the bone-density screening booth, where I helped with the screening of osteoporosis for the underserved population.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

Personal Statement Growing up in rural Colombia in the midst of the coffee region where individuals from all over the country, especially indigenous and those with limited resources would come to tender the coffee fields, I realize now that it gave me a view of how healthcare is not a right but a luxury. The political turmoil and my brother’s health condition forced us to flee our beloved country to seek help in a foreign, unknown land: The United States. After almost three arduous years of all of us going in and out of hospitals, my brother got the surgery he needed and his life was changed forever. Soon after, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and my life now changed. Being young, not even fifteen years old, and dealing with a condition…

Working as a medical assistant in the underserved community of Hawthorne, Florida taught me a great deal about rural clinics as well as associated patients. The lack of resources at the Open Arms Medical Center engendered several issues. When our medical supplies were low we were required to be more cognizant of using them sparingly and effectively. In doing so, I learned to not take supplies for granted. The inadequate amount of supplies also showed me the frustrations of being limited in the care a clinician can provide.…

Often subtle and invisible, structural and symbolic violence play a detrimental role in the U.S food system, ranging from who picks the fruit to who eats the fruit. Structural violence, the violence inflicted on individuals through social institutions further preventing minorities from achieving basic needs and symbolic violence, the naturalization, including internalization of social dynamics while different in their meanings, are intertwined by a common denominator (Holmes, 2013:157). This common denominator, the notion of inflicting harm on those already below the playing field, with further inspection becomes more apparent. Structural and symbolic violence in the food system disproportionately affect individuals, specifically minorities…

The difference between betterment and development stems from the concept that, “Betterment gives a man a fish, development teaches a man how to fish.” This phrase supports that development offers immediate relief, whereas development offers solutions to the cause of the societal issue. Lupton explains that, development requires the building of relationships and critical thinking due to the complexity of a vast amount of societal issues. Due to the critical thinking involved in development, as well as the complexity of a clear majority of societal problems, development takes longer and results in long-term solutions. On the contrary, betterment improves the conditions of an environment temporarily and if betterment programs continue beyond…
