I have some very special friends with a little extra vivacity, a little extra compassion, and an extra chromosome. This extra chromosome twenty-one has inspired me to live a life of purpose and significance. Over the past three years, I have had the opportunity to serve the disabled, ill, and their families through volunteering at Wiser Women’s Hospital and Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital. I have also had the opportunity to specifically serve special needs adults and children through YoungLife FunLife, and YoungLife Capernaum. My friends with special needs and disabilities have inspired me to pursue a career devoted to understanding and researching genetic disorders with the hope of someday improving their quality of life. When I was a child, my mother always referred to the children and adults at my church or school as “special.” The word special is so significant because special needs friends have so much value. …show more content…
Capernaum gives young people with developmental and intellectual disabilities the opportunity to experience adventures, meet new people, make lasting friendships, and push themselves to new limits. Every second of this week was precious. To be able to lead kids with specials needs out into new experiences and new relationships is priceless. One of the campers in my cabin, Lizzie, had Down Syndrome, and she changed my perspective about life. I went to Capernaum with the purpose of serving special needs children and adults. Consequently, these people blessed my life. One of my favorite memories with Lizzie was watching her go down the water slide. Lizzie went down the slide at least ten times a day, and each time she went down she was simultaneously smiling from ear to ear, screaming, and laughing. Each time she went down the slide she was scintillating with total joy, and all I could think was, “Why can I not have that much fun on a water

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

If there was a room somewhere where someone said, “Look, you can go in there and have your DNA changed,’ I would be there breaking the door down. ”(Hayden 403) This statement reminded me of an argument that one of my classmates had made during our essay discussion. As someone who has an uncle with a genetic disorder, she provided a practical viewpoint in which she said that you can not ignore the emotional and financial stress that having disabled family member poses.…

To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…

The idea of existentialism is believed to have been founded by a Danish philosopher named Søren Kierkegaard, who lived from 1813 to 1855. Although Kierkegaard was a religious man, existentialism became a more atheistic worldview as the philosophy further developed in the 20th century. There are many variations of existentialism, but the main idea of it is that human lives has “no meaning unless people give them meaning.” To elaborate, existentialists say that although life itself originally has no absolute answer, humans are free to choose or create their own meaning to life, without being swayed or forced by the voices and ways of society and religion. This is an intriguing worldview, as it not only supposedly answers some of the biggest questions…

Being a special needs mother isn't the best thing in the world as propagated by many but it's not the worst either. It's somewhere in the middle! Like that tiny sole boat which keeps bobbing because of constant ocean currents or high tides. The bad days seem like you’d be eaten alive by giant waves, but good days can feel like a calm vacation, although they don’t last as long. The challenges are mostly because of the unfamiliarity of the sea and once that is learned, things become better but never predictable, because the ocean, as we all know, has a mind of its own and has the capacity to jolt the best of the boats.…

As I reflect on my personal life I value life itself to the point I live each day not knowing what to expect the next day. Positivity is a major factor in all that I do to the point of trying to view all things in a positive way and leaving the negativity out the door.
