"Young lady, that is not proper! Where are your manners?". Why does it matter? I would think after being scolded for having my elbows on the table, not crossing my legs (whether in a skirt or not), or possibly making fart jokes. Does anybody even care, except for my grandmother? What I did not know at the time was that these small chidings were the slow steps of society molding me into their perception of proper. Proper is the complicated, dolled up character society pretends to be to impress people no one cares about, unless of course, they are the potential employer.
Going back to the example of crossing my legs, and ceasing all dirty jokes, it is shown that a very young age, females are taught to be "ladylike". This means to stay hidden

This expected trait consists of eternal friendliness, devotion to the customer, matching outfits, modesty, limited vocabulary and topics of conversation. Throughout my life, I have worked two different types of jobs: part time in a small ice cream shop, Skeeter 's, and also full time in a customer service call center. Skeeter 's was my first job, therefore, it was the first to teach me how to be proper in the world of business. I learned the basics of what was appropriate to say and what wasn 't. For example, my employees and I were taught to say "products" or "items" when referring to the elements of their order, instead of "things". While working at the call center, I also learned some more rules for how to behave professionally, and was even spoken to a couple of times for expressing my emotions, normal ones that I know every human being has felt. In one of the first weeks, I was scolded for sharing the fact that I felt overwhelmed, while apologizing into email which regarded me making a mistake, because it was deemed unprofessional. Professionalism is the community approved act of covering up the specs of our humanity with a suit and tie, and pretending to be someone most people don 't like: "big wigs", "stuck up", "fake", etc. Society puts on this production so that they will be accepted by the other individuals who pretend to be the billboard man …show more content…
Professionalism in the work place, keeps individuals on a semi-equal level, modest, and gives the eye a sense of unity and validity using uniforms. The language restrictions help prevent the invasion of privacy among co-workers or even sexual harassment. Dictionaries do help people to all mutually understand what words are defined as what, but do not limit the word 's meaning, or determine what is proper and what it is not. While these elements of what is proper and what is not are seemingly essential to humanity functioning with fluidity, they can become too much. The limits can be too tightening and unnecessary, making individuals feel as though they cannot comfortably be themselves. Proper is the idea that humanity should all act the same, which is an impossible goal, and should be lessened so that people can go back to being themselves.
