The rituals at the meeting in the forest being evil in nature, but also being so similar to a traditional Christian church service causes Young Goodman Brown to lose his faith in Christianity and in religion in general. Most church services include a time period of singing and a sermon. When Young Goodman Brown describes the structure of the meeting, he notices that, “Another verse of the hymn arose, a slow and mournful restrain of pious love, but joined to the words which expressed all that our nature can conceive of sin, and darkly hinted at far more.” The hymn is described as showing “pious love”, which is similar to a normal Christian hymn, as all hymns are about God, therefore having a pious nature. In the forest, sinning is encouraged, and honesty is not considered important as Goodman Brown is told to spread sin around to other people whenever possible. Again, the structure of a church service is followed and even some common principles are mentioned, but the uses of these principles are distorted in order to satisfy the need to spread evil rather than good. The structure meeting in the forest being so similar to a traditional church service, but having the opposite intention proves to Goodman Brown the it is the nature of humans to distort ideologies to fit their intended outcome. Now, whenever anyone preaches anything through using Christianity, Goodman Brown would “turn pale”, or when his family knelt down to pray, he “muttered to himself and gazed sternly at his wife and turned away.” Therefore, through witnessing the similarities between the structure of the evil natured meeting, and a well intentioned church service, it became clear to Goodman Brown that Christianity is simply a construct of mankind with ideologies that had fitted the a goal that someone intended, which happened to be stopping evil.
