Young Goodman Brown: #1,2,3,10
By including the names of the actual person and places, Hawthorne gains a personal connection with the characters. When giving the actual name of a person or place, it could give a historical background to the story. Using their names gives the reader clues on how the characters in the story should be perceived.
The point of view of Young Goodman Brown is third person point of view. In the beginning, it starts of as third person limited because Goodman Brown is being described as watching the sunset. Then it shifts a little with more of a narrative commentary. After the narrative commentary, the shift goes back to third person limited.
The allegorical meaning given to Goodman Brown is to represent man and his wife names Faith is to represent

By reading, “The world has been sad since Tuesday.” readers could think that the story will be sad or gloomy since it means that it has been raining for a long time
The old man with the enormous wings represents escaping reality. It could represent that he is also an angel since he has done nothing to anyone to harm them but then when readers read how the old man’s rings are, they could tell that by trying to escape he has fallen and can’t get back up. He doesn't believe in himself and it lacking faith. As long as Pelayo and Elisenda.
There are many blends of realistic and fantastic details, for example when the little girl turns into a spider because she disobeyed her parents. Another example is the old man with the huge natural looking wings. I believe that it does make it make effective but it is difficult for readers to understand since reality and fantasy are mixed in the story. It does require of different meaning to understand what is true and what is

Hawthorne wanted to repent for his ancestor’s actions by distancing himself from his family heritage, so he changed his last name from Hathorne to Hawthorne. Nathaniel’s body of work consisted of American short stories that emphasized the evils of the world. In “Young Goodman Brown,” Hawthorne writes about the change in his relationship with the people of Salem. Goodman Brown leaves his home at dusk and arrives back later at dawn to have a complete change in his perspective on the villagers of Salem. Goodman Brown finds that people he thought were pious instead are becoming members of a cult.…

“Young Goodman Brown” is a story written very plain and vague in style, which is why Richard Fogle, a literary critic, discussed the ambiguity of its goal; “the ambiguity of the conclusions which may be drawn from it” make his stories “more difficult” to understand (432). Fogle’s review of the story’s simplicity very important because it really emphasizes the direction of the story, or rather, the lack of it. He goes on to elaborate on what he decided was best to take away from the story when he says, “Hawthorne poses the dangerous question of the relations of Good and Evil in man [...]” (433) and further that he “wishes to propose [...] that man is primarily evil” (432). Fogle’s perspective on the story is valuable to readers because it helps reinforce aspects of the reader's interpretation by providing a second-hand examination of them. Fogle helps confirm that there is indeed a vagueness to Hawthorne’s writing, but instead of being a flaw, the technique proves itself to be an enhancement to the story.…

Special consideration is placed on the interior monologue of goodman Brown when leaving to go on his journey, “Poor little Faith… What a wretch am I, to leave her on such an errand!” (387). This provides the initial crack in the façade towards the question of faith. This moment also foreshadows the question presented by the narrator, “Had goodman Brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch-meeting?…

Young Goodman Brown has the potential for change, but requires an outside force such as outside influence to initiate his transformation from faith in Christianity, to Satanism. Young Goodman Brown’s potential for this transformation is evident in how he is described has having “wickedness in his heart”. “At the word, Goodman Brown stepped forth from the shadows of the trees and approached the congregation, with whom he felt a loathful brotherhood by the sympathy of all that's wicked in his heart.” (13) Goodman Brown’s wickedness could not have been created solely by his experience in the woods.…

In the short story “Young Goodman Brown”, Nathanial Hawthorne uses symbols such as the forest, serpent staff, Faith, and her pink ribbons in order to support the meaning of his story. The forest that Goodman Brown travels through on his errand can be seen as life and its dangers. The staff resembles a serpent that can be seen as a symbol of an evil being or demon. Faith can symbolize Goodman Brown’s religious faith. And lastly, Faith’s pink ribbons can display Faith as a symbol of purity and innocence.…

As a result of his night of “evil purpose,” Brown lost his faith and innocence. Very intentionally and creatively, Hawthorne demonstrates Browns innocence of life via symbolism. The lives of each character exemplify Brown in some way. Firstly, the protagonist, Young Goodman Brown serves as every man and woman, the common man, anyone. As the story begins, he initiates his journey leaving his wife at home.…

Evil is understood as the force in nature that oversees and provides a rise to wickedness. Evil is a very difficult subject that many consider displeasing, however, evidence from the stories, “ Young Goodman Brown,”,“ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” shows that evil does exist; and has existed since the beginning of time. By reading these three stories the themes of Good vs Evil, “Young Goodman Brown,” greed and gluttony in, “ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and moral decay in, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” become quite apparent. If all these themes are put together, it shows that there is great evil in each and every human heart. In the tale, “ Young Goodman Brown,” Brown is representing the common man who is struggling in the fight good against evil, which he portrays by venturing into the forest in the dead of night ( the forest generally representing wickedness), and discovering things that are suddenly shown or understood in reality that all must eventually face— that there is sin within the world and nobody is perfect.…

Reading the short story Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorn has left many impressions on what the theme may be to me. I believe though the most prominent theme that stuck with me was loss of faith and happiness. While reading the reoccurring event of Goodman Brown facing something that tempts his faith in God and his happiness with his wife Faith, Its pretty evident that it is the theme. The question was asked if the theme can still be used currently today, which is 181 years later than when the story was originally wrote.…

There is an old saying: “You should never judge a book by its cover.” In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children,” that is precisely what all of the characters do; each character makes their first judgement on the man with enormous wings based on how he appears to them. It is not until the man with wings has lived with Pelayo and his family for some time that they learn more about what exactly he is and what he to them for. It is often easy for someone to make assumptions about someone based on how they look and act.…
