Everyone at one point in their life has strayed from pureness into evil. Where they meet a hellish version of themselves, or when on a journey into what they could become and become witness too. In Young Goodman Brown this is foreshadowed by “He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind.”(Hawthorne, page 2)This is an obvious indication that something isn’t right but at the time it can be overlooked by the reader and Young Goodman Brown. The quote means once someone starts on the road to something good or bad the person won’t be able to go back if they change their mind. The Devil's main job is to stray people from the path of righteousness, and into sin and corruption. The Devil can be shown as many things whether it be a someone trying to pressure another into doing wrong, the actual Devil, or bad omens like seeing a black cat crossing. On the third page in the fifth paragraph the Devil talks about how he knew Brown’s grandfather ( a constable or policeman) explaining he helped when they slashed a Quaker woman in the streets of Salem. Showing that he had strayed another relative of Brown’s into committing wrong. It also shows that the devil or his actions can rear his head at any point in time. Furthermore shows that the devil will always try and steer you from the path of righteousness. It takes into thought that he had the devil over his shoulder guiding Brown’s relative, is like the devil and angel on someone’s shoulder.
Brown also finds out that the townspeople are not what they seem to be. All working with Satan, whether just being in the cult or participating in the events, like the witch. But either way if it be followers of someone personified as the Devil or the actual devil and his followers they will try to destroy one’s faith. Taking someone's faith and throwing it

Hawthorne came from a very serious Christian family, and his writing reflects that. He has multiple biblical allusions in “Young Goodman Brown” alone; these include the biblical snakes that signify the devil (421), the different priests and ministers that provide an important role in the common church, and the devil himself (426), who disguised himself as an old man to trick Goodman Brown. The whole story is about a community that falls unfaithful to the hands of the devil and betrays the word of God, and the sin-and-brimstone result that Hawthorne was well known for illustrating made a reappearance when Goodman Brown was struck with a depression and melancholy spell for the rest of his life. Hawthorne used his own experience with depression and illness to help add to the horrible damnation of the wrath of God that betook the protagonist. This background on Hawthorne’s faith and illnesses helps the reader understand where the story is coming from and to get a better grip on the message that is supposed to be taken away.…

The Devil represents evil and he knows that he will bring him harm. Even though Goodman Brown seeks the Devil it is shown that he is still hesitant, saying his “father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him” and that they have “been a race of honest men and good Christians”(Hawthorne, 26). Goodman Brown, despite wanting to sin, still believes deep down that seeking out the Devil is trouble. The Devil, however, scoffs at the idea that the Browns were a good family. He has had multiple run ins with Goodman Brown 's father and grandfather, telling him that his grandfather “lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem” and that his father “set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip 's War”(Hawthorne, 26).…
