In the passage “There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree," said Goodman Brown to himself; and he glanced fearfully behind him, as he added, "What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!” (529) presents the devil as a supernatural element in the story. Young Goodman Brown consistently talks to the old man throughout the story and is the person who is perceived as the devil. In the passage “Had Goodman Brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch-meeting?” (536) shows that his meeting with the devil was all a dream though it was a dream it still changed his whole life. The Tell Tale Heart also has a sense of the supernatural. In passage three on line 14 “And this I did for seven long nights --every night just at midnight --but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye.” (1128) shows the evil eye as the supernatural element of the story. Nathaniel Hawthorne is known as one of the most studied writers from his use of allegory and symbolism. With his ancestors being part of the Salem witchcraft trials, he was burdened with a deep sense of guilt. He then used fiction as a means of exploring the moral dimensions of sin and the human soul. One factor that could have led to Hawthorne writing this story was a new belief system called positivism, which was on the rise during his time. Positivism elevated science.…

Hero versus villain, light against dark, moral contradicting immoral—these variations of the battle between good bad are commonly used in a large number of stories. Most often the hero displays model behavior while the villain’s behavior is not to be duplicated. In his book On Moral Fiction, John Gardner said that a well written story “present[s] valid models for imitation.” One short story in particular, “Young Goodman Brown” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is no stranger this element, but it also contains invalid behavior models. In “Young Goodman Brown”, Goodman Brown, just married to his wife Faith, leaves one night to set out on a journey with a dark Traveler.…

The Devil represents evil and he knows that he will bring him harm. Even though Goodman Brown seeks the Devil it is shown that he is still hesitant, saying his “father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him” and that they have “been a race of honest men and good Christians”(Hawthorne, 26). Goodman Brown, despite wanting to sin, still believes deep down that seeking out the Devil is trouble. The Devil, however, scoffs at the idea that the Browns were a good family. He has had multiple run ins with Goodman Brown 's father and grandfather, telling him that his grandfather “lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem” and that his father “set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip 's War”(Hawthorne, 26).…

Edgar Allan Poe faced many trials and tribulation throughout his horrific life. Poe’s despair-filled life seemed to be a piece of Gothic literature brought to reality.
