She regaled the crowd, all fourteen of them, by finishing the meeting with her version of the new hit by Webb Pierce, You’re Not Mine Anymore. Lelia didn’t know all the words, let alone the chords, but she didn’t care: She knew enough to fashion it in a fun style, and as always, finished the song with a performance of all the best chords she knew.
As she finished the song with her flurry of chords, Pearly chuckled to Clarence, “Lelia might not know the entire song that good, but she sure knows how to finish ‘em!” Everyone laughed and clapped, including Lelia.

She remained uneducated, and extremely poor, all things that Owen had hated growing up. The strong Baptist brimstone views Margaret held were especially intense. In fact, the woman’s beliefs were so different from Lelia’s Methodist upbringing that she found herself in disbelief that a human being could think that way.
Lelia knew that Margaret regarded her as a tad snobbish. Though not Lelia’s intentions, she was.

“Are you sure you’ll be okay with this rowdy bunch for the entire week?” Lelia turned from the sink, where she scrubbed the last of the pans from their Thanksgiving meal. Mother Bauer rolled her eyes, and in her squeaky high pitched voice that grated on Lelia’s nerves she said, “I wouldn’t have come, if I didn’t.”
“Sure.” Lelia thought. Living in that dumpy apartment of hers, up in Augusta, she’d jump at any chance to leave it. “Well, alright then, I’ve made a list,” Lelia sighed.
“Mama, I’m scared, I don’t want you to go.” Five-year-old Jessie held tightly to Lelia’s apron strings.
“Aw, Jessie, it’ll be okay, Nannie Bauer will take nice care of you. Lelia wiped her wet hands on the front of her apron before gently stroking the top of Jessie’s
