You Give Love A Bad Name

Driving down the interstate, when suddenly the song “You give love a bad name” by Bon Jovi blares onto the stereo. I am suddenly overcome with images that correspond with the what Jon Bon Jovi is singing. Scenes begin to coincide into something that resembles a story. Two married spies, arguing over a captive. She pulls a gun, he tells her not to be rash, which is exactly what she does. Shots ring out, as operatives rush to take the two into custody. A catastrophic argument occurs between the two as they effortlessly fight to escape their enemies. The images stop as the song fades away from my ears, and I realize once again I was day dreaming. Far be this from the first time today that I had done something similar, and it would not be long

In the twenty-first century we tend to distract ourselves with technology that keeps us from taking the time to genuinely think, or rather that is what twenty one pilots want you to see. “Car Radio,” written by Tyler Joseph of twenty one pilots, is based from a personal experience Joseph had where his car radio was stolen and the experiences that followed. It, and the associated music video, produce the argument that we need to spend more of our lives in silence rather than surrounded by sound. The rhetoric of twenty one pilot’s “Car Radio” is effective because of emotional appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos. Twenty one pilots establish their credibility by placing themselves in a place of power and control in their music video for “Car Radio.”…

With heartfelt lyrics, the musician Death Cab For Cutie portrayed his song “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” through a stop-motion video consisting of a book of drawings. There was symbolism riddle throughout the entire video, including the lyrics, with the drawings of people, animals, and inanimate objects. The video follows the life of two bunnies that are in love and between the shots of the bunnies, there are drawings of people with writing around them, similar to a journal entry. Around the journal/book being used there is a small cup of coins, a picture of a woman and a postcard in a frame, a clock, keys, and a ruler and pencil. These small details and the song paired with the video create an emotional, well thought out piece of art with many different meanings.…

It is eleven o’clock on a Saturday morning in the mid 1980’s, my younger brother and I are sleeping peacefully in our beds. We are suddenly awaken by a blast of music coming from the downstairs den. I quickly jump out of bed and run down the hallway bumping into my brother who has the same destination as I. We both race through the living room, the dining room and past my mom in the kitchen then down the three, blue carpeted stairs to the large den. My dad is sitting on the edge of his leather, rocker recliner with his 1974 Fender base guitar playing along with the song, “Dixie Chicken” by Little Feat. The music was turned up so loud no one could talk or hardly think.…
