As the father said that he was terribly sorry twice to his son and put as much effort as he could into purchasing a newspaper to him before getting on a train. We can be told that the father thought it was a pity that he could not bring his son to his club and have a meal together. This is the sad truth of the father but he tries to find a way to compensate for his son and he was brave enough to apologise for not having a good meal with him. As far as we can see the echo of sorry from Charlie the son as he stated ‘That was the last time I saw my father’ twice in the story which means he might understand that why there was a contrast of his father speaking impolitely in public but he emphasized that he was sorry to the son in a humble way. And he wished he could be a perfect man like his father
