Eating disorders are mental illnesses that are hard to come by. Once you’ve can in contact with this mental illness, its almost impossible to escape it. There is a Yoplait commercial that has stirred up a lot of controversy around the world. Controversy that the Yoplait commercial is condoling eating disorders or re-triggering it for previous patients. Due to the effects of the commercial, the National Eating Disorder Association asked Yoplait to take down the commercial. According to Yoplait, “Ultimately, we’re focused on making so good yogurt, and here’s how we see it: you can eat something that tastes amazing but isn’t that good for you. You can eat stuff that’s really good for you, but doesn’t always leave you yummed up. So good yogurt does both.” Yoplait tries to provide a “healthy lifestyle” for it’s consumers, but gave out the wrong message to it’s audience. The Yoplait commercial effectively draws in their audience who needs or wants to lose weight, through mental comments, peers, and body image. In the Yoplait commercial, a woman is contemplating whether or not she should eat a slice of cheesecake. She understands that the cheesecake is bad for her so instead, she tries to make up different scenarios in her mind. Being in an office all day it is hard to open up the fridge and find a full cheesecake just laying there. It is a community fridge and most office-working people are going to be territorial over their belongings and not willing to share. In that case, there would not really be a full cheesecake sitting in the fridge waiting for people to eat it. Also, in most offices, they are really busy, therefore, they are better off grabbing something quick and keeping it moving.
