The Devoted I bet most devout Christians and Jews, who follow the Bible, believe their following the Book of Books down to the core , but are they really taking the Bible literally? Imagine living life exactly as the past prophets did. From stoning individuals ,flying to the holy home of the major three religions , Jerusalem and herding sheep ,performing a chicken sacrifice in New York ,to getting someone to take a house call and come inspect your whole wardrobe for anything containing “mixed fabric”. You can take what the average Christian/Jew presumes to be absolutely following the word of God and amplify it by 100. That’s how you’d describe A.J Jacobs’ journey in his book, The Year Of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible .…
Passover is Jewish holiday that lasts for a week. It celebrates the time when the Israelite finally had freedom from the Egyptians. During the first two nights of the week's festival, families eat a religious dinner called seder. The elders read the story to everyone while eating. Passover food was also symbolic.…
The Holocaust was a horrific period of time, a genocide so great that two thirds of the jews in Europe were murdered and a whole world was drawn to war. With so many dead, those left are given the responsibility of passing on the lessons that the Holocaust taught us, so that it may never be repeated. Elie Wiesel is one such person. He was a young boy when the Holocaust started, yet he managed to live through the travesty and is now informing on it in his memoir, Night. The Holocaust changed Wiesel in three main ways.…
Hanukkah is a holiday celebrated by Jews. It is an eight day celebration of lights and fun. Hanukkah is celebrated to devote to the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. Which is why Hanukkah is a hebrew word which means dedication. Believe it or not Hanukkah can actually be pronounced and spelled two different ways.…
When the shell built by childhood and innocence becomes removed, it’s as if for the first time an individual can truly see the limitless boundaries of the horizon. For Elie Wiesel in his work, Night, his boundaries lied at the edge of his hometown of Sighet. At age 16, Elie wanted to expand his horizons by strengthening his relationship with God, and although his father was against Elie taking up spirituality, he went and found himself a tutor in Moishe the Beedle. Months into their lessons, the Gestapo abducted Moishe. Managing to get away, Moishe planned to teach Elie one last lesson of the danger that lied ahead.…
The Shemitah year was where God commanded Israel to observe the Sabbath day, and also the Sabbath year, every seventh year. During the Shemitah, they were not to sow the fields or gather from them; instead, thye were to be left to rest and if anything grew in them, the poor were allowed to come and gather for their own needs. The author also explains prophesies such as the Harbingers and also prophesies that have recently come to pass, such as eclipses and the “Blood Moons.” The book goes over several more prophecies; one for each chapter that spells out the meaning and correlation of the Shemitah years, and also what each Shemitah year would mean to…
Shabbat is a religious holiday of the Jewish faith. There are similarities between the ideas behind this and other culture’s day of rest, although Shabbat differs somewhat in its customs and spirit. Right when the Shabbat starts as the sun begins to set on Friday the mother of the family lights the candles and says a prayer welcoming the Shabbat. It is customary in many homes to light a candle for each child although this is not a practice carried out entirely across the board. After the candles are lit the men go to synagogue to say the night prayers which vary depending on the day of the week.…
I had the privilege of being one of the Torah readers on Yom Kippur. Before and after my Aliyah, a person from the congregation had to chant the Torah blessings. I had to use a Yad instead of directly touching the scrolls to follow the reading. The Torah is written only in Hebrew without vowels and some letters are more elongated than usual. It is always nerve wrecking standing in front of hundreds of people about to read on the holiest of holidays.…
Pi’s Hindu Religion Pi’s first religion was Hinduism, which is most likely where most of his beliefs came from when handling situations later in the book. It doesn’t surprise me that Pi’s first religion is Hinduism because it originates from the Indian subcontinent. (“Britannica”) One belief of the Hindus is in karma. (“9 Beliefs” )…
Loss of innocence affects people in the way they view the world. World War II, the era of Holocaust takes place in Europe when the Nazi party begins its systematical murder of millions of European Jew. Nazis set up numerous concentration camps, forces Jews out of their homes and separate families away to be sent to the camps. The reality of the cruel world is exposed to the vulnerable victims, children, as the misery of the Jewish nation takes away their innocence. A victim of the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel, writes a book called Night based on his experience with his father in the Nazi concentration camps in 1944 to 1945.The abrupt invade of German Nazis disrupts Elie’s teenage life by forcing him and his father to separate with rest of the family.…
It is so interesting to me that waiting there for the coming of the Holy Spirit with the disciples were some unnamed women, who probably were followers of Jesus. His mother Mary and his brothers. One hundred and twenty disciples. Those who were connected to the Day of Pentecost continued steadfastly in prayer (2:42). Also at Pentecost after the miracle experience, connected with the Pentecost, after the connection with Pentecost , after felling the Holy Spirit followed by the speaking of other tongues, up to now, the Spirit of God had been with the disciples, but how He took up His residence in them (John 14:17).…
“I have come to the conclusion that the most important element in human life is faith” ( Rose Kennedy). Bereft of faith, one is merely an empty shell who strives for nothing in life. Elie Wiesel uses Night to comment on the effects of the Holocaust that cause the loss of his faith. Elie Wiesel, once a religiously dedicated child, endures anguish and suffering in the concentration camps, which leads to the wavering of his belief in God and ultimately the destruction of it, transforming him into a soulless corpse. Religion was a crucial part of Elie’s life; however, when he first experiences the horrors from the Holocaust, the meaning of religion for him gradually changes.…
The Shabbat is mentioned in the creation story in the bible and is also the only holiday mentioned in the ten commandments. This day is for people of Judaism to appreciate time as a gift given from God and rest their bodies/mind. There have been many interpretations of the true meaning behind Shabbat, but the majority of them focus on being your own person in the world that God has made for you (Falcon 208). The celebration starts on Friday at sunset and ends Saturday at nightfall. Sabbath is welcomed by the lighting of a candle (traditional Jews mostly use a menorah, but any two candles will do) mostly by a woman since men in traditional households normally have work or temple until after sundown , wine or juices for underage children, and two loaves of a special bread in Jewish tradition called “Challah” which is simply braided egg bread.…
This day is known as Judgement day in the Christian bible, and the purpose of it is to give humans another chance at eternal life. Adam and Eve lost their right to this when they sinned, and caused the rest of their descendants to sin and eventually die.…
