Yoko Ono, born in Tokyo in 1933, was very artistic from a young age. She had always shown interests in art and music yet was never supported by her parents. Her father believed that since he failed at becoming a musician, instead becoming a very successful banker, that Yoko herself would also fail, while her mother deemed her “handsome, yet not pretty” to the point where Yoko felt she could not live up to either of her parents’ expectations. Her father's job in banking led to Yoko being dragged to the U.S. and exposed to American art and culture, which would lead to her large interests in sculptures. Being a Japanese born citizen in the U.S. during World War II, Yoko claims that she was never in a public place without being reminded that she was Japanese and “a baddie” by both entertainment and people (Zoladz). Lennon and Yoko would soon start an affair with each other despite both having spouses, and in Lennon’s case, a son (John). Julian Lennon, John and Cynthia’s child, would later come out and openly criticize Lennon on loving and caring more about Yoko than Him and his mother (Grice). In 1969, Yoko and Lennon both would divorce their spouses and marry each other. Soon after the marriage, Lennon’s band, The Beatles, would decide to disband and leave the public blaming Yoko for pulling lennon away (John). This break up would lead to Yoko’s films being banned, her art hated on, and even death threats. Despite all of the hate directed towards Yoko, her and Lennon would continue to be seen together and have peace demonstrations, such as their “Bed-In” and would even have a son, Sean Lennon (Needham). In 1980, Yoko would come to be blamed for yet another crime. The death of her husband, who was shot outside of their home by a deranged fan.
