Love and peace seem like the most two stodgy words for artist. In today’s world, there are only a few artists who can convey love and peace directly from their artworks. Yoko Ono is one of them. She is a multimedia artist, Avant-Guard artist, singer, and she is also known for her work in music and filmmaking. However, some people think her works are too simple and easy to understand, some people think her works are not creative at all and even cannot be called art. Yoko thinks she is not an outsider, but also does not have much of a relationship with the dominant group. She is herself, she is not an Avant-Guard artist, she is always being herself.[footnoteRef:1] Peace and love are very important to everyone, just like breath, simple but essential, …show more content…

They met on November 9, 1966 when Lennon came to an exhibition of Yoko’s at the Indica Gallery in London, England. Lennon was attracted to her artwork. Actually that is not the first time they met. Lennon had seen her famous show “cut piece” before and fell in love with this Japanese artist. After 18 mouths, they divorced with their previous husband and wife and got married in 1968 in Gibraltar. After marriage they did many collaborations together including some recordings and experimental films. During their honeymoon, they held a movement called “Bed-ins for Peace” to revolt the Vietnam War. After the Beatles’ breakup, the couple moved to New York, where Lennon was killed in front of their building on December 8.[footnoteRef:4] [4: Biography.com Editors, “John Lennon and Yoko Ono”, A&E Television Networks, Accessed November 3, 2015.

While the identity was largely debatable in avant-garde theatre, performance artists always presented themselves and claimed their own identity by usually working alone. No character was involved in performance art, and thus performance artists had never been actors. Yoko Ono, for example, performed Cut Piece (1964-66), which is considered “a commentary on identity,” where she asked audience to cut her cloth to test how far and aggressive people could become as it is described as “[T]he invitation triggered the voyeuristic desire among the audience even though most of them felt restrained from participating.” Her underlying idea of this performance was to examine how Americans in the late sixties would perceive the Japanese female artist,…

Beginning in the late 19th century, immigrants from Southern Italy and Sicily began to settle in a neighborhood of East Harlem, New York. The immigrants brought with them the values of their homeland, many of which were centered on their devotion to their Catholic faith and to their families. The American-born children of these immigrants often felt oppressed by and disconnected from their parents’ values and ideals, and tensions between the immigrants and their children often ran high. While the Italian immigrants were devoted to their faith and on conscious, intentional, and spiritual levels, it seems that many of their children continued their religious and familial values on cultural and subconscious levels, rather than a spiritual one, and often times did so out of resignation or obligation, rather than genuine enthusiasm.…

This writing considers the question of Yoko Ono’s “Cut Piece,” which is one of the most important works of that artist’s career and of its period. The essay specifically investigates the critical question of what one can learn from “Cut Piece” about the role of women in society at large. It seeks in investigating this question to uncover trends over time, seeing how the role of women has changed over time and how the role of women has been depicted in art. There will be three primary sections to the body of this work that will help to provide a clear picture of the overall meaning of this piece of art in conjunction with feminism and the role of women (Johnson). First, there will be an investigation of the piece itself to ensure a proper understanding of what is actually being studied.…
