On Friday the 10th of March 2000, I, Yohanny Rosario was born at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Wayne, New Jersey. Although I was born in a Wayne hospital, I have lived in the town of Haledon since I can remember. It is a small town with just one public school that siblings and I have attended from preschool all the way to the eighth grade. I am the youngest of four with one brother and two older sisters. Currently, I live with both my mother and father and just my eldest sister. We are a Dominican family that speaks both the English and Spanish language at home, but mostly English. As of now, I am in the eleventh grade enrolled at Passaic County Technical Institute and in the Child Development shop. As part of a Dominican family, culture plays a somewhat significant role in my life. Besides the delicious food and riveting music, my Hispanic heritage also heavily influences my morals and those of which I was raised with. Growing up, I’d like to say although we did have enjoyable …show more content…
Family, friends, health, school/education, and spirituality are all examples of what is extremely vital to me. I believe each of these areas tremendously influences a person’s ability to grow happily and individually. To me, it is also equally important to stand up for what you believe in and appropriately express one’s opinion. Perseverance and determination are another set of words to describe what matters to me and gets me through tough times. Through therapy, I’ve learned to alter my outlook on handling personal struggles by having a positive attitude, imagining positive outcomes, and understanding there is a purpose for everything. I’ve learned to accept circumstance and also consider myself a hardworking, intelligent, compassionate, creative person. As I’ve gotten older certain things have become more clear, while others more confusing. Future life decisions are at hand and I’m grateful for the person I have developed

Having the privilege of being born and raised in the Dominican Republic would instantly be a life changing experience. Having the opportunity to be born and raised in such a humbling country meant that I would be lucky enough to experience Hispanic culture at first hand, but it also meant that I would have the advantage of calling myself a Hispanic. The wisdom and experiences gained from being born and cultivated in the Dominican Republic are experiences that have molded me to be grateful for being Hispanic. In this experience, I have learned to be ethically and culturally competent while looking past any bias. I learned that children in Hispanic families play a large role in communicating and translating amongst the English world. Children are assumed adult roles considering their understanding of American culture and language. Coming from a Hispanic background means that I have the ability to do more than my peers. Growing up in the United States and living in a Hispanic household gave me the chance to have more than one cultural view. Having more than one cultural view allowed me to develop an open mind that helped broaden my views, and helped me in my life. However, I was often told that the world looks more at your race than it did intelligence, character and integrity. For a while, I believed that statement due to the fact that in middle school, I noticed that there were more successful white people than any other race.…

I’m Mexican, I was born in Mexico but then brought over here to the US when I was around 3 years old. My whole family was born in Mexico and I’m the youngest child which means that all of my brothers and sister grew up for most of their childhood in Mexico and my oldest sister even got married over there. We eventually all moved over here and that resulted in our family being very culturally connected with Mexico’s culture. My mother is a strong believer in continuing cultural traditions even if we are in a different place. So she made sure we always knew a lot about where we came from or special traditions that were done in Mexico.…

Although it may not be the orthodox turning point people so often read about in young adult novels or hear in motivational speeches, my trip to Colombia matured me in such a way that I have become incredibly aware of myself and of the stigmatized minorities in America. Along with being a very liberal minded millennial, I am also one hundred percent Colombiana and am finally proud to say so. Until my two month visit to Bucaramanga ,Colombia I was embarrassingly ashamed of my ethnicity to the point where I felt the need to tell anyone I met that I was half-white so I would be “safe” from stereotypical jokes. Years of ridicule took its’ toll on my 12 year old self and made me resent my culture, ethnicity, and overall self. I hated bubbling Hispanic…
