Set in Mars, the second of the Martian Chronicles, “Ylla” tells the story of a female alien who lives with her husband on the Red Planet. This marriage is tough, and though they used to be in love, they are struggling now. Ylla begins to have strange dreams of other aliens who live on Earth, the third planet. These aliens from Earth have blue eyes, black hair and white skin, while Ylla and her husband have yellow coin eyes.The planet was supposedly uninhabitable, because it had too much oxygen the air for life. This dream was about one Earth Man in particular named Nathaniel York, who tells her of her beauty and sweeps her off her feet. Nathaniel is supposedly coming to Mars with his co-pilot Bert. Though it had some seemingly similar scenes, with a man taking his family into a rocket to Mars, it is very different, and is almost more Realistic Fiction than Sci-fi. The story is about a man and his family, a wife and three children. Unlike Yll and Ylla, their family is sound, and very close to one another. All of them have a dream to go to Mars, Venus, and into space, but they work in a junkyard that makes little money, and a place on a rocket is very expensive. But the father, decides that instead of spending his money to upgrade his machinery, he want to go to space with his family. However, he only has enough for one seat. As each one of the family members goes, they all realize that though it is their dream, they cannot do it without the rest of the family. Because of this, they ultimately decide none of them will take the seat. Later that day, someone comes to a junkyard to sell a mock up spaceship. Though it cannot take his family to space, it looks completely real, and the man buys it without the knowledge of the family. He then takes the money to add and change it to his needs, and convinces his children to go up with him for a week, though his wife is skeptical. The ship, after the work of the father does not move, but uses films and turns on the engine to make it seem like it is moving through space.
