“Yertle The Turtle” Before Dr. Seuss was writing his greatest works, he was employed by the Allied forces in WWII to create cartoons and propaganda films. This background had an influence on him that would show up again and again. Dr. Seuss was often believed to only be writing to entertain children; however, he is actually trying to convey certain messages of political and social issues to his youthful readers. It was important to Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel that his readers got more from his stories than simple humor and rhyme. It is still relevant and meaningful in modern society. With the rise and popularity of the dictatorship in North Korea, the world is still in a time where a totalitarian regime is not only possible but widespread and globally known and feared. Seuss knew when he was writing his poetry that his messages would never be out of date. The basis for his writing was pulled from his time of working at the New York Newspaper as a cartoonist. He believed that everyone has the right to a voice no matter your age, race, or gender. These topics are still being debated today. From the Me Too movement to the ongoing protest for March For Our Lives, America shows how much they care about people who aren't there age or gender. The March For Our Lives bases itself on the fact that students are the ones at risk. This is one of the first globally known movements that has been lead by children. The high schoolers that lead the movement have most likely read or have had someone read them this poem at one time or another. The little turtle Mack makes a stand when he says that he has had enough of Yertle’s rules. This parallels the students in the March For Our Lives campaign that believe that enough is enough and that the Parkland school shooting should be the last.
