At this time in the book robbers come into Mattie’s and Grandfather's house and decide to look for their money box. Little did Mattie know that the robbers were willing to kill. “The man struck Grandfather’s head against the floor. Grandfather’s eyelids fluttered and then closed.”(26). This quote clearly represented how the city gradually died and fluttered to deep slumber under the reign of the yellow fever.
On the other hand some may argue with my point of view. Some may say this book represent new life and prosperity while death gives you nothing but grief and misery. What they fail to realize is throughout the book Mattie is constantly mentioning her struggle to become a woman rather than a little girl. “... I couldn’t take care of Nell I can barely take care of myself.”(27).”’How can i help anyone? I’m just a girl!’ … the first time anyone has treated me like a woman i respond as an infant.”(22). This represents not only Mattie’s internal struggle but also the struggle to find her
